"Mileage Blocker"
“Mileage Blocker”, I heard of it here first on one of my favorite YouTube channels, used car dealer George J Saliba:
. He is from JS Autohaus in Ewing, New Jersey. I think me may be the owner. There are some incredible cars on the JS Autohaus lot. BTW, I just love this channel. It really digs deep into the car buying/car selling experience, that I have been roped into about 15 times. Unscrupulous car sellers, to include some dealers, are known to install one of these devices which locks up the ECU capability to log the cars accumulating mileage. Installing a Mileage Blocker is clearly fraud and grand larceny too. A seller can do jail time for installation of one of these devices.
Chat GPT says, “ A “mileage blocker”, also known as a mileage freezer or stopper, is a device that prevents a vehicle's odometer from recording mileage while it's in operation. It works by intercepting or manipulating the signals sent from the vehicle's sensors to the ECU (Engine Control Unit) and other control units, effectively stopping the mileage from being recorded in the vehicle's memory. These devices are designed to be undetectable by standard diagnostic tools and can be used to pause or adjust mileage based on specific testing needs.
How do you detect a Mileage Blocker?
Detecting a mileage blocker can be challenging, as these devices are designed to evade standard diagnostic checks. However, professionals may identify their use through several methods. A thorough inspection of the vehicle's wiring and electronic systems can reveal unauthorized modifications or unfamiliar devices connected to the odometer circuit or ECU. Additionally, inconsistencies between the vehicle’s physical condition—such as excessive wear on the seats, pedals, or steering wheel—and the low mileage reading may raise suspicion. Service records and maintenance logs can also be cross-checked for discrepancies in reported mileage. In some cases, advanced diagnostic tools or manufacturer-specific software may detect irregularities in data transmission or gaps in the electronic log that standard tools miss. Ultimately, while a mileage blocker is designed to be covert, careful examination of both the vehicle and its history can sometimes uncover its presence.
And finally, when it is time to buy or sell a car, transact with someone you have a long term relationship with. I am extremely lucky as I have known Brent Smith form Smith Volvo in San Luis Obisbo, CA. We go back some 20 years. He has bought and sold quite a few cars for me, and my friends too. Brent is a true "Porsche Geek" with a collection of special Porsche street and track cars, with him having been on the track since the early 1990's.
