Upgrade suspension for track?
I acquired a 991.1 base 911 last year with no PASM. I plan to track the car about 6 times a year. How capable is the stock suspension? I have an opportunity to upgrade to a nice set of JRZ coilovers and my question is whether this is necessary. I have roughly 20 trackdays under my belt and I’m coming from an F80 M3 with bilstein b16 coilovers and a 996 with KW v3. Both suspensions made the car feel more stable, but can’t really say whether they did anything to improve handling. Body roll and dive were reduced, but I can’t say for certainty whether this improved lap times. For the guys that track the 991 often, is an upgraded suspension necessary? Did it improve handling or am I just throwing money away with no real improvement. Thought and opinions?
If you want to improve lap times, if nothing on the car is broken, spending the $ on entry fees/tires/brakes/classes will improve lap time more than any modification, at least until you get to a semi-pro level of personal performance and driving consistency.
And your FIRST upgrade will be the Tires, Second Braking system... than suspension...
The BRAKES are the weak part of the 991's....

Read my thread on my 991.2 Carrera T Set-Up and mods. Still on stock dampers with a DSC controller and running with the GT cars. You can get a lot of lap time out of the stock dampers!
Thanks for all of the feedback guys. The consensus is that the stock dampers are more than sufficient for tack duty, which I assumed. Unfortunately I don’t have PASM so can’t use a DSC controller. Next track day is scheduled for 5/23-24. I bought some AO52 tires on 19” wheels and will be swapping in some track pads. Other than that, all stock.

realistically the springs are way too soft for track. compare what a stock GT3 comes with and you'll clearly see Porsche is holding us back big time, but also consider that GT3 people upgrade from those even.. This showed up on track for me right away and I had low confidence to push with the front springs falling over all the time even with PASM trying to help.
As a track junkie as well, I'll chime in and support what others have said. Do brakes and tires first. If budget allows, then do the JRZ's. You will notice the difference with the JRZ's but if you dont do brakes and tires first then it will be wasted money until you do. I went through this exercise with my Carrera T. It came with the base brakes too. I upgraded to the Brembo BBK but for you, some J hook rotors and upgraded pads, fluid and tires will improve lap times quicker than suspension mods.
