Default 991.2 Soul Headers - Weird sound from Turbo

Hi everyone. I just installed the Soul Headers on my 991.2. I also previously did their cats and valued exhaust. After install I’m getting this sound when the turbos kick in and it doesn’t seem right. It almost sounds like the turbo fan is hitting against something. Thought it was an air leak. But not sure. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Sounds like an exhaust leak. Did you use new gaskets on the block and the turbo?

I did. But something must be loose. Do you think the leak is from the turbo to the cat or the header to the turbo?

If it wasn't leaking before the header install, I suspect the leak is between the header and the turbo. The header/turbo interface is the highest pressure point in the exhaust system. It's been a while since I installed my exhaust, but I think the fastener torque specs were 25Nm/18ft-lbs. Perhaps it needs a little more oomph?

Yeah I ask because I dad to loosen my cats to the turbos to get the oem headers off. But good to know that the most pressure is at the header to turbo. I suspect that most likely.

Took the driver's side header off and found what I think is the problem. Glad I didn't just tighten. Getting that one bolt off is a pain!

Where did the missing piece(s) of that gasket go? Were you able to account for them?

I those pieces were inhaled by the turbo, the impeller fins may have taken damage.

That's insane. I've never seen a new gasket fail like that. Did Soul provide the gaskets? Do you know if they're OEM?

Gasket installed backwards maybe? or you have had a massive hot side pressure leak for an extended period of time. Lucky something didn’t catch fire.

Thanks for the feedback. I did not account for the gasket but will have to check in the turbo. If the fins are damaged is that repairable? How would I go about changing them?

The gasket was OEM as far as I am aware came with the headers. It is identical on both sides so don’t think it could be backwards.

I suspect that your turbo is fine. High pressure at that point should push debris out of the exhaust, not into the turbo. That said, I 100% agree you should check. If you find any damage, you'll probably need a new turbo.

Definitely talk to Soul about this.

They are sending me a new gasket. But concerned about the turbo. From the video, does it sound like the turbo fan is hitting against something? I'm going to have loosen my cats and the entire exhaust to get to the fan. Or should I put it back together with the new gasket and see if I hear or notice anything different?

How is pressure diverted between the exhaust and turbo?

It’s going to be hard to inspect the turbo hot side impeller blades without taking the turbo off, I think. I suggest taking it off. If you have one of those small borescope camera probs that might work, without removing the turbo.

Thank you. That's a good idea regarding the borescope. So I should come in with the borescope from where the header connects to the turbo, assuming that's the hot side.. Not where it connects to the cats correct?
