Advice on buying a 991
#16
For most of us, the 911 is a diversion to take our mind off a trip’s destination and focus on the journey. It’s a toy, an expensive one, but still a toy to enjoy both physically and emotionally.
So that being said, here’s my quick take to add to your list of advice:
1. Choose the color(s) you want first to narrow it down. This is an emotional, not practical choice, so you have to enjoy looking at it every day. (Black is a pretty common interior color BTW).
2. If you like going fast from a standing start without pushing the engine too hard, go for the 991.2. The first time I test drove a 991.1, I asked the salesman if there was something wrong with the engine. It felt slower than my 30 yo Ford station wagon driving around town. You really have to push the 991.1 to feel like you’re going fast.
3. Maintenance is not cheap, but not outrageous either for a 100K sports car. In the 6 yr I’ve owned my 2017 C4S, I pay about 2K$ every two years for scheduled service and do my own oil changes in between. So as long as your PDK doesn’t fail, you probably won’t break the bank.
4. If you really don’t have a preference Manual vs PDK, go for the PDK. You will have far more options.
5. There is some value to CPO but I wouldn’t make it a deal breaker if it’s not CPO’d. Get a PPI from a reputable mechanic if you can.
6. Don’t even think about resale value. You’re buying this car for you, not the next guy. If you find a car that really speaks to you, buy it. Life is short.
