Default Can anyone help me with this sound?

Long shot, but can someone help identify the sound coming from my engine?
2018 991.2 S with Fabspeed Exhaust. 14k miles. See video attached...it's short due to size.
I will take it to the dealer, I really want to know if I can even drive it. Drives fine when I came back from my son's school...that's when I first notice the sound.

Is it only while cold or does that sound persist even after the engine has been running a while?

Thanks Teir1. The car sat a week in my garage. I noticed the noise on a short 5 mile trip to and from my son's school. So at the end of the ride I heard it. It was 40 degrees outside. Some kind of knocking noise. I do only use 93 octane if that helps.

My 981 and 991 do very similar sounds if I do not use them for over 2 weeks. Goes away within 15 minutes. Try that.

Well that is good to know. Maybe fluids need a good circulation. I'll take it on an easy run.

yeah... it's a loud metallic tappet noise. But fades after a while (usually 10-15 min in my cars)

Car sits, oil drains away from the lifters. Once the car gets to operating temp it should be mostly gone, then once you get the RPM's up on a good drive you're golden. This is why they say not to let the car idle cold for a very long time, drive it. You need RPM's the push the oil everywhere it needs to go. Normal.

What he said. Normal operation particularly if the car has been sitting for a few days. Once up to operating temp the noise should go away. What's annoying is that this situation (noise) doesn't always happen...some time it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

My 991.1 sits all winter (5 to 6 months) and it is quiet when I start it up in the spring,

Never bothered thinking about it, but are the lifters easy to replace as they are on my 993?

As previously stated by other members. Normal for a vehicle sitting for an extended period. My vehicle’s engine sounds the same on a cold start up and diminishes after fully warmed up or normal engine operating temperature.

Spoke to a Service Tech at Hennessy Porsche here in Atlanta. He said their mechanics said the exact same thing everyone else is saying. Take her for a 20 minute drive so the oil can circulate.

You need to do that everytime you take the car out? Sorry, not normal. Lifters are quiet unless you have a lifter problem, if this is happening repeatedly.

Mine sits for weeks at a time, never made this sound. I thought it was the waste gate on turbo going bad...

Exactly and same here. Can you imagine going for a new car drive at the Porsche dealership and the salesman is telling you that is normal, but it goes away after a 20 minute drive.

The OP should get under the car and see where the noise is coming from. A member here (Tommy L) had a similar noise a few weeks ago.
