Default 991 3D printed rear cup holder

I am searching for cup holder solutions for my 991.2. I ran across a 3D printed rear cup holder that uses the bolt at the bottom of the rear seat center tray for real stability.

My local library will 3D print for members ($0.20/gram), but I don’t want to go through that for a wasted effort.

Here is the design I ran across: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4697816

Design files here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4697816/files

Has anybody used this design? Anyone with a 3D printer game to try and provide a review?

It doesn't look like it would be worth the effort. They look pretty small. Spills will be on the back seat instead of the front. By the way, are you a woodworking router dude?

The listing said they were 80mm (assuming diameter) so a little over 3”, looking at picture I would guess they are about the same or a bit more deep. If that is the case that seems pretty usable to me. I will try to find a way to open file and see actual depth dimensions.

No, not a woodworker, a packet pusher.

Free 3d modeling software. They also look shallow, which is the issue with our cup holders.

If they are indeed 3” wide by 3” deep they would be better than any other cup holder in my car … not sure what cup holder you have that is better? You mean the ones on the dash that are not solid walled thus allowing further tilt angle than a solid walled cup holder? Are there different cup holders by model? I only have the 2 dash ones in my 991.2 tts.

I am still hoping someone with a 3D printer will give it a test and give us a mini-review.

It would be good to have one made to fit into the door pocket towards the front of the door, hinge end.

The cup holder in the back would be awkward to reach and grab...well I know it would be for me anyway.

I agree that placement would not be ideal. I considered something that would sit in center console and had something to keep lid locked open … but sitting in my car (hit my damn funny bone on closing lid) made me realize my elbow would hit whatever I put there.

The door idea sounds good until you forget and open or close door and drink spills.

Anyone have the Nurburgring from t-9design? (Or something like that).

What about the kaizen one that replaces our Eject Button?

Ha! I have that lighter replacement in my Boxster and this one in my 911.

I have the same cup holders everyone else does - the cup holder that doesn't hold cups that are tucked into the dash. The best I've found and one that has been mentioned in these forums is The Ultimate Cup Holder. Have one in each of my cars.

Thanks for the tip, I have not seen that one before. Looks like they are on pause for now, based on the website … I’ll keep watching for them to pick back up.

I just got this made for my 991.1 and it was $90 after shipping and taxes using Craftcloud (I used two different materials for the different parts).

It seems to work well and fits snuggly. It definitely is more usable as a cup holder than my Kaizen one, that's for sure.

Happy to answer any questions about it.

Thanks for the info! How well attached is it using the nut at the bottom of the tray? Any movement or is it "locked" down, as they say?

How much of challenge is it for driver/passenger to use from the front seats?

Very solidly attached if you screw the nut in tight (but not too tight, the cupholder is plastic). It sits well and fits snug. Getting the right tool to tighten the nut (since you need to go all the way through the cupholder) was definitely a challenge. I will say I need to give it some force to get it all the way in when installing (my bolt was at a slight angle). Subsequent removals and insertions were slightly easier.

As a driver, I can reach back and grab/place drinks if the car is stopped. I wouldn't want to do it when the car is moving. A passenger can access it when moving.

It still allows for the rear seats to be put down, but it does rub a little. I personally wouldn't want to do it too frequently since I have leather. If I had a trip where I knew I needed to fold the back seats down, I may consider removing it and reinstalling.

Also, I didn't love the finish of the top due to how the 3d material was laid (you could see the "level" of the material) so I bought some sandpaper and used a respirator to smooth it out. May also use acetone to get it looking nice, heard that works well with this sort of material. Looks wise, it's definitely not as OEM looking as the Kaizen cupholder, but I think looks fine since it's in the backseat anyway. I'm happy with the flexibility it provides.

Oh and I used FDM TPU for the liner and spring insert (2 of each). Definitely don't used a hard plastic for that.

I used PETG for the main piece and the cap. From the limited investigation I did, PETG seems to fare better than ABS in direct sunlight.

Craftcloud made this super easy and cheap-ish (if you don't mind waiting) as you can review quotes from 10+ 3d printer companies around the world. Would definitely use them again if I wanted some else printed.

I have one of these. I bought it off a Rennlister. It works although if I were to have another one made, I'd choose a different type of plastic. The one that I received is kind of brittle and I remember when tightening it down that I felt it was going to crack very easily. But it works and my kids use it all the time in the back seat (water bottles only). They don't topple over. The design could use some refinement as it in no way can pass for something that might possibly be an OEM option like the Kaizen one that goes in the front center console where the ashtray would go.
