Default Hoping this is normal….

I have had my 2018 991.2 for about 6 months and absolutely love it. Just recently I have noticed when the car is cold I can hear a slight ticking from the engine or exhaust. It seems barely noticeable when the engine is warm or normal operating temperature. Is this ticking normal? I would upload the sound , but I am a little behind in computer skills. Thanks in advance and hoping this is normal.

Likely the fuel injectors. Normal.

I want to say this is normal but don’t know for sure. I happens with mine too. Once the car is warmed up, you don’t hear it anymore. I’ve heard this is a common issue and it’s the sound of the lifters. Had this same issue with a BMW. Was fixed under warranty and came right back. This is why I’m inclined to believe it’s normal.

It may be the sound when the exhaust components warm up, or cool down due to expansion or contraction. When you park it and are out of the car with the engine off, the ticking can be more noticeable once the exhaust starts to cool. I guess the best option is to post a sound clip.

Normal. Just the oil not fully circulated around the motor yet (from sitting) so things like the lifters are noisy and not fully lubed yet. Should go away once you drive for a little and engine gets to temp. Mine sits for a week+ between drives and always sounds noisy at start-up idle. Gone when I arrive where I'm going.

There are good ticks and bad ticks, all of which are difficult to describe in a forum post. There is normal ticking from fuel injectors, but then bad ticking if a high pressure fuel pump starts to crap out. Both sound very similar, but the fuel injector ticking normally lessens as the car warms up, whereas the HPFP failure the ticking is louder than normal and doesn’t go away as the car heats up. That’s just one example, but in general, these cars make a lot of sound and smells that are AB-norm compared to a Camry. Really, I think some good advice is to just learn what the normal sound/smells are, which can take a few months of ownership, and then if something new pops up he seems abnormal you can investigate that sound/smell more closely (or have your mechanic do so).

Probably the lifters. It happens if the lifters are not fully pumped up with oil at start up. The issue is usually more prevalent on a flat configured engine. It's generally more apparent if the car has been sitting for a few days particularly if the weather's been cool/cold. A couple miles of gentle driving gets the oil moving and will solve the issue.

I'd say normal, without hearing yours of course. 911's have unique sound characteristics being rear engine with the engine so close to the ground.

Did you have a 991.1 before the 991.2?

I think the 991.2 has a noticeably quieter tick compared to the 991.1 3.8 but it's still there.

Does it sound like this? If so, very normal.

My 2017 C2S had 14,300 miles on its odometer when I purchased it as a CPO vehicle from the original selling dealership. During my first year of ownership, I occasionally noticed a slight ticking sound when the engine was started after sitting a few days or longer. Without my saying anything to the dealership because I thought it was normal and likely due to the hydraulic valve lifters mechanism bleeding down oil upon sitting unused, the dealership at the next annual service/oil change also did an engine flush, for which they charged me about $57 additional. The dealership did that again 2 years later [after my 3rd year of ownership]. Now it's extremely rare for me to hear any ticking, even after the car has been in an unconditioned storage garage for several weeks or a few months. My car now has 34k miles and the engine is usually very quiet upon cold start-up, although it occasionally makes a very slight ticking sound, and even the location of that slight ticking will vary from cold start to cold start. I wouldn't worry about it; and suggest that you drive your car more often and use it's flexible power band more if you are able on roads where you live.

I’m going to say normal. Lots of strange little paranoid noises come out of these machines. You’ll know when some is truly not right.

My 3.8l has always been a bit ticky, but the car uses no oil, runs strong and has been perfect to date. I would say the sound you are hearing is normal.
