Default High Mileage Risk? 2013 C4S

Hi All,

I'm in the market for my first 991 and am thinking about pulling the trigger, but it has 79K miles, which is way more than I was hoping for.

What do the reliability and maintenance look like for this engine as the miles start to add up? I haven't been able to find too many for sale with 100K+ which has me slightly concerned.

Also, do stock ECU tunes from reputable vendors like Fabspeed have an impact on reliability as mileage increases?

TIA! I'm coming back from a few years overseas and am excited to get back in a cab for the summer!

79k isn’t a lot of miles. Well-maintained high mileage examples often are more reliable than low mileage garage queens.

My 2015 991.1 is only at 34K, but from reading a zillion threads, the higher mikes ge potential big-buck surprises are confined to cylinder scoring, and PDK transmission.

A good inspection with bore scope can, I think, identify bore scoring ... I dunno about how anything but the most obvious failures would show on a PDK, but the fluid should have been changed by now.

PDK 1st service is 12 yrs, 120k miles. Very reliable cars, 79k is higher than most because most people use as a weekend car and store over the winter. You have little to worry about. There are very rare PDK failures but mileage does not seem to be the precipitating factor. It is quite random and very rare.

Maintenance is one thing, how the car was driven or abused by the previous owners is another thing. Its always nice to have a one owner car if possible instead of multiple owner cars. Owners that have cars short term (sort of like rental cars) tend to care less about the vehicle.

Low mileage cars have miles ahead of them, not behind them.

I don't think the cylinder scoring has been issue since the 997.1 and the PDK failures are extremely rare, but get press due to the extremely high cost of replacement with very limited options to repair at lower cost..

I traded in my 2013 PDK C4S with 140,000 miles on the clock and it was a fantastic car.

Just make sure all the services are up to date...... if not use that as a bargaining chip to lower the price.

A 2013 with 79k miles amounts to a paltry 7900 miles a year.

90k on my 2013 C2S manual. It has been a no issue car and runs like new.

Not many 100K for sale because people who keep them that long are enjoying them, not selling them. I had planned to keep my last one way past 100K, but some lady entering a roundabout had a different plan. I was @ 80K and insurance paid out more than I bought the car for, so even with the miles, it held it's value in the current market. Is it a PDK or manual? Get a DME report either way and see how many miles/hours/starts are on the car. This will give you somewhat of an indication on how it was used. From what I can tell bore scoring isn't really a thing on these cars. If you had a previous owner who decided to "warm it up" before driving, the DME might give you some insight if that was the case. Even then it is not a common occurrence on the 9A1 engine according to what we see in this forum. These cars are robust. If it is a car that has the options you want/need and speaks to you, I wouldn't shy away due to mileage, assuming it is appropriately priced. As a bonus you can use the milage as leverage in negotiations.

Thanks, everyone for the feedback!

Here's the listing. I normally like flashier colors, hence my username referencing my last Porsche, but the black-on-black looks clean and it checks off all of my must-have options. We'll see where things end up.

Those front rotors look like they are soon due for replacement.

Yeah, the seller is claiming sub-3 0-60 times which would be a blast but seems too good to be true, right? The advertised hp figures I can find are:
  • Fabspeed Exhaust - 27
  • Fabspeed Headers - 15
  • IPD Plenum - 15

That would require 123hp from the airbox and tune. I’m in touch with the shop that did the work to figure out exactly what’s going on.

You realize advertised peak hp gains aren’t necessarily at the same rpm and don’t stack, right? You don’t just sit there and go “this gives 20 hp, this gives 10, and that gives 10, so now I have 40 more up!” Not to mention, dyno numbers are notoriously unreliable, even the same car the same day has variation 5-10hp, let alone different cars, different dynos.
