Default Brake Caliper Studs

I'm looking to swap over to brake caliper studs to facilitate pad changes for track days. Local shop recommended also tapping stud holes bigger and installing heli-coils for additional strength. Is this really necessary?

Also, was going to go with Tarrett Engineering studs. Anything better out there?

TIA

What did you like better about the Girodisc?

No need for helicoils unless the threads in the wheel carrier is stripped.

Your shop sounds suspect. I've never heard of a need to do this for any HPDE car..could not comment on full track rat set up. I've run Giro studs with no issues what so ever. Makes changing pads much easier.

Maybe the shop or a previous “mechanic” stripped the threads? No need to helicons all corners, unless they’re all stripped. The more you change the pads, the more wear you get in the wheel carrier though; maybe if you’ve changed pads numerous times, the threaded Area is weakened, in which case a new wheel carrier might be the better choice.

I like the installation process better because of the tips. Can't find a good picture....will make removal easier too

The Girodisc studs are a bit more application specific in terms of where/how the shoulders are machined so they are a little nicer. They do cost $50 more per car but I think worth it. Can't go wrong with either option, however. I have most sizes in stock for both flavors.

This is only needed if your upright is stripped.

Also to add I prefer to use a time-sert instead of helicoils. I also green loctite the time-sert in. Never had a failure or issues of any sort. Been doing this for 15+ years on all kinds of caliper /wheel carrier.
