I've seen so many variations of badging out there, I am wondering what were the factory options?

By default it's
PORSCHE
911 Carrera S

I've seen just PORSCHE, some with just 911 or Carrera...

Those are all options. They all say PORSCHE. You can opt for "Carrera xxxxx" , "911," or "no model designation".
When you have "no model designation" and just PORSCHE the letters are lowered slightly to put them in the middle.
If you know what you're looking at you can tell by the placement.
