Anybody have experience with radar detectors? Do they work reliably? Recommendations? Installation tips?

humbly you need to do some off site research. there are a lot of different models that offer different features and capabilities. after reading up on the basics you can decide which features meet your needs and how much you want to spend. then start checking out which makes and models fit the bill.

Agree with the 1st reply. You’d have similar luck if you replaced “radar detectors” with “religion” insofar as the variety and applicability of replies you’ll get. That said, I’ve been very pleased with my Uniden working in conjunction with Waze. Neither is perfect, but combined, they work well enough for my purposes.

As to installation tips: check out this thread for a great write up. I went with Blendmount in two cars and am really happy with the end result. The wiring in the 991.2 was simple with this guide:

Well, I have used Escort for many decades. I have lost count of the saves on the latest Redline. Still have a MAX360 in the other car that still does a great job. Install ? I have debated about as long, but keep it simple & use the windshield mount & 12 volt under the console on a 991.
When I am hitting the road, like the old commercial, don’t leave home without it.
Escort is not cheap, but a bargain at twice the price imo.

My recommendation is don't cheap out. Go with either the latest escort max 360 version or the Uniden R7 or R8. The blind spot warning filtering, GPS filtering and other elimination of false alarms make the system so much more usable. Don't worry so much about the most extreme range, they will all give you a mile+ of warning if the cop is lazy. If they are using instant on or laser in low traffic areas you're probably screwed anyway.

I run waze and my escort max 360 and have been 'saved' by each many times in different situations. They are just another tool in your toolbox, but they can more than pay for themselves if you are in a highly targeted area.

Hardwiring is very easy in the overhead light cluster with a mirrortap. I saw someone already posted the DIY up thread.

Been using the Radenso Pro M for some time and is pretty quiet with few false readings and good usable range. Compact size, and like previously said, pair your detector with Waze and you've got a fighting chance.

I am partial to the Uniden’s and have had my trusty R7 for a few years. I also have an R3.

I love my Valentine One(s) in my cars. Have been a Valentine fan and owner of several generations of them. Simple to use, long range detection and high reliability. Saved my skin multiple times over the years.

My Uniden R3 has provided me with increased situational awareness allowing me to adjust my driving style on numerous occasions. It has paid for itself several times over.

Tier1Terrier

I have a Uniden R7 hardwired with a Blendmount. Works as expected but plays second fiddle to Waze which is my most reliable. I’ve never had radar picked up that Waze didn’t alert me to first.
