I have been hedging on this for a while, but your adaptor solution seems to solve a lot of my reservations. Wonder if there is a one-piece adaptor that marries the two pieces.

Post more pics when you get a chance.

Are you worried about modifying the lights themselves?

I debated this a bit, but ultimately decided modifying the lights was no big deal. It's not like you can plug them incorrectly, even with the notch removed. I also would rather not deal with soldered harnesses.

My reservations has to do with cutting through the plastic tab on the amber lights to fit the US plug. I did not want to cut through the amber tails because if the lights were DOA or had issues, I would not be able to return them. Also, if I decided I did not like them, I would have to sell at a deep deep discount if they were cut up - mhconley's adaptor solution keeps the lights oem and the solder seal connectors he mentions removes the need to actually solder.

I did not want to modify the existing harness nor the lights themselves. This adapter works perfectly and it is completely reversible.

And I promise, once we get a break in the thunderstorms and I can give the car a good wash I'll post pictures. With my current travel schedule it may be a couple of weeks. I love the dark RS tail lights on my black C2S cab. The yellow turn signals are a big plus in my eyes - even though I'll never see them myself.

Did the change during hibernation and finally got to take a video today.

Big shout out to @mhconley for his research, work, and information on the harness. Works greats with all connections remaining OEM.

Here is the vid.

I know this was a while ago but, do you remember how long it took form ordering to delivery? I ordered a set a couple days ago and am curious what the wait time should be. Thanks!

It was surprisingly fast. I ordered 8/21, they shipped on 8/23, and I had them on 8/25.

I've spent a lot of time researching the subject and found what I believe to be the definitive part numbers for this swap. These are the left hand drive (option code I098), left hand fog light (option code I465), rest of world (not US) part numbers I have compiled:

Standard Red:
991-631-141-12 thru 15 (left)
991-631-142-12 thru 15 (right)

Dark Red:
991-044-901-20 (left right set)
991-631-141-82 (left)
991-631-142-82 (right)

Clear:
991-044-900-15 (left right set)
991-631-983-00 & 02 (left)
991-631-984-00 & 02 (right)

I cannot seem to find the part number for the standard red set.

One other thing of note is that the US cars flash both turn signals and brake lights to indicate a turn whereas the European cars flash only turn signals. (Flashing both brake lights and turn signals on a European tail light would flash red and amber together.) I am not sure if this behavior is programmed in PIWIS or simply a matter of different tail light internal wiring. Does anyone know if PIWIS programming is required and if so what parameters need to be changed?

Thanks,
Martin
Does anyone have a pic of standard vs dark red side by side?
Are they very different?

Are they both TUV approved for Germany? Thanks!

I swapped to the tinted euros about a month ago. Pic is US spec standard on the car, euro unit in my hand.

I believe - but could be wrong - that the only difference between the standard and dark red lights is the fact that the plastic housing for the standard tail lights is red while it is black on the dark red tail lights. I do not believe the lenses are any different - again I could be wrong. The dark "tint" you are seeing is the black plastic visible through the lenses.

Looks like you're right and it's just the black surrounds vs red causing the 'tinted' effect. Thanks for the info. I'd say the dark looks a bit better!

If it only was easy to open them up, paint inside and close them back up properly

It's possible - probably just need a hair dryer / heat gun to weaken the adhesive, then open them carefully, then do the rest as you said!
We used to do this on s2000 headlights (or put them in the oven at low temerature) to remove the amber reflective markers inside the headlamps. Probably far more risky with those as they had the xenon circuitry, but it worked!

The taillights already get condensation in them (at least all my 991 taillights have had this problem), so maybe you can seal it better than the factory afterwards too! Ha!

Oh yeah I know about baking them, it's still not an easy task. Mine also get some condensation, I don't know if I want to deal with trying to open them however.
