Default Tire Gloss

I would like to get some input on the application of gloss to the tires. when i bought the car new (2017 911s 911.2 Guards Red), the dealer told me that the application tire gloss would ruin the tires and shorten their life and I have not do so as a result in the nearly 6 years i have owned the car (2nd Porsche, first was a 1999 Boxter). Other tell me that the application of tire gloss will do no harm. any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks!

Some tire gel can dry out your tires. Good, water-based dressing does not. It can extend the life of your tires. I recommend Poorboys tire gel. It’s very effective and definitely acts as a protectant.

I stopped using the gel or another heavy gloss coating because the black liquid would spray off the wheels and spatter on the fenders making an otherwise well detailed clean car...not. I'll try the water based recommendations.

Realistically, your tires should be a dull, dark grey, not a glossy black. If you want the "dog peed on my car" aesthetic then yeah, slap on some tire shine goop, just don't put it on the tread. Otherwise just clean your tires along with your wheels -- those products are labeled "wheel and tire cleaner" after all.

Poorboys does not sling if you let it dry, and it lasts through some washes. It’s very good stuff. It’s also not really shiny… just a nice black. It also doesn’t require intense cleaning prior to application. Give it a try.

love the black shiny tire look. been using various tire shines for decades and have never ruined a tire...or even come close. pro detailer friend told me to make sure the tire is clean before applying anything so that rules out any of the "clean and shine" products. current favorite is this....
Amazon.com: Meguiar's G7516 Endurance Tire Gel - 16 oz. - Premium Tire Gel for a Lasting Glossy Shine : Automotive Amazon.com: Meguiar's G7516 Endurance Tire Gel - 16 oz. - Premium Tire Gel for a Lasting Glossy Shine : Automotive

lasts for weeks!. it's a bit too "wet looking" for me when first applied so i give it quick wipe down and wipe off after application (using a clean/dry rag). tames the shine down a bit and prevents any chance of spin off on to the wheels/fenders etc. if you like the super wet look, then leave it alone after application. you do need to let it dry completely for at least one hour but it's well worth the wait for me. great stuff.

I've tried that as well as everything on the market. Nothing tops dura coating. Friend is correct: CLEAN tire is key. As @asellus mentioned, no gloss. Even SEMA cars don't have layers of soul glow on the tires.

I like the Gyeon tire dressing, semi-gloss/satin look. Very low sling if applied and let dry a bit.

It definitely finishes off a detailed car.

The High Gloss Slop they use at the car wash is a no-no.

this stuff is great, but it does require a LOT of elbow grease especially with tires that are not brand new. i am on my second bottle (my new PS4s took to them well) and figured out the best way to do the cleaning (the tires need to be SCRUBBED until absolutely free of everything. much easier to do when they are new) is to attached a brush to an electric drill. saved a lot of time. patience is key but the good news is you'll be able to not worry about tire dressing for the life of your tires. truly.

Why not contact the manufacturer of the product and there are a few out there. Get it from the horse's mouth.

What a crock of crap. If the sidewall is the limiting factor of your tire life, that probably means the car sat undriven for a decade.
Certain dressings could accelerate the oxidation of the sidewall, which could lead to a brownish colored called 'blooming', but if you actually drive the car the tread will wear out waaaay before the sidewall ever becomes a problem.

Tire dressings don't ruin tires (just don't put it on the tread, there was a funny "jet focking black tire" thread 20 years ago on Lexus forums about how someone did that, and crashed his car in the rain). Some people like it shiny, some people like it clean and matte. Up to you.

I use Ammo Tire Mud. Love all his stuff. But it will condition the tire without leaving a wet, glossy look. He is a concours detailer and has developed his own line of auto care products. He's definitely OCD.

I wear through my tires a heck of a lot faster than any kind of tire dressing will ever damage them. If your tires are rotting out then you aren't driving enough and it's time to sell the car.

I like Chemical Guys
Amazon Amazon

I use Chemical Guys and love it. Water based and shines as much as you want it to.
