Don’t have a dog on this fight as I haven’t driven/owned a 991.1 or a 997.

However your descriptions of their behavior makes me feel happy about my 991.2 C4S manual.

Second is good for ~66 mph third gets you ~105 and jail if unlucky. There’s good pull from 1700 rpm so you don’t need to be rowing up and down unless you want to. Gas mileage is all around in the low 20s and highway 28+, have even seen 30s.

Lucky for me I don’t deal with city or rush hour traffic anymore.

In the end I surmise that owning and driving 911s is better than driving the vast majority of other cars.

I have 57K on my 2013C2S MT 991.1 I can drive it like a granny around town or wind it up when roads permit. Best for stop and go commuting, no. Outside of that, I love it. Do I still stall it at lights while keeping rpms low to crawl away? Sometimes yes. I still prefer the MT.

Having owned the 6 speed 987S (which is very similar to the 997) for several years before adding my 991, I didn't find the 7 MT in my GTS to be "bad" in any way. It was simply a bit vague in higher gears especially when downshifting, simple 45 minute fix with a Numeric shifter. It is now Perfect and I prefer it over the feel of the 6 speed in my cayman

I’m not concerned with gearbox feel, but gearing. In a base (350 hp) carrera, would the gearing be so tall that you need to be in first when exiting turns during spirited driving? Is there any way to keep the revs up in second gear under 50mph?

Why not find a used 7-speed manual at a dealer and drive it instead of wondering if it is right for you.

Have been trying just that. Find me one .1 in / around La. There are zero. There’s one S at BH Porsche. The extra 50 hp / tq may augment the feel of the gearing.

Understandable as the reviewer in the video below mentions. But then in LA or any major city, I guess PDKs are better in bumper to bumper traffic, but then why would anyone drive a Porsche in traffic.

I have the gearing for my GTS. I wonder if the gearing is all the same for ALL manuals; I never bothered to check.

Skip the GTS aspect of this video and go to the 3:00 section where he talks about the manual. As for the GTS, if you keep your cars as I do, consider one. I bought it used in 2018 and if it had a PDK, I would never have considered it. I have driven the PDKs while at the Porsche Track Experience events though.

I have a 997 GTS and a 991.1 GTS. Both are manual transmissions. On a spirited drive, I'll take the 6 speed over the 7 speed any day. I've always said that the 7 speed just never feels like it is in the right gear. I was curious why, so I researched it a bit. The 991 has taller gearing in 2nd/3rd which is where I spend most of the time on a spirited drive.

Wrote more about the comparison for those interested... https://www.gtsence.com/911-carrera-...ed-vs-7-speed/
