Apogee One DAC through Aux
I'm a bit of an audiophile and musician, so I'm interested in making things sound the best. I am glad to see the 991 has an Aux input in the glovebox. Many newer cars don't. The quality playing music through BT Aux flat out sucks because of the limits of Bluetooth. But if you go from your phone > external DAC > Aux in the car, it has the potential to sound great. I had an Apogee One lying around, so I decided to give it a try. Wow, what an improvement. It decodes at 24-bit/96 kHz. The 24-bit part is more important, and you shouldn't sweat 192 kHz vs 96 kHz (I'll leave out the detailed explanation). Even more important is the *quality* of the DAC. I've been using Apogee stuff for about 15 years, and it's great. Their DACs sound really great, and the quality of the gear is great too, as it's made in the US. Other advantages: (1) Apogee gives you a lightning to DAC cable, so it plugs into your iPhone with no adapter, (2) if you power the DAC with the cigarette plug, it charges your phone (it won't with the battery), and (3) you can start the car on Aux and not have to deal with the annoying radio channels. You can't start on BT Aux because it takes time for the BT link to be established, and it flips over to radio as a default if you try to do that. Check it out if you want better sound.
