I'd be curious what the alternative to this ineffective drum would be

The “drum” is effective at transmitting noise. I just find it useless because I don’t like its tone and artificiality. Just like a real drum the tone is limited by the size of the membrane. It is discussed in more detail elsewhere on RL. Regardless, it serves no performance purpose and is only for some dubious aural pleasure. The alternative is removal and plugging, and then hearing the ACTUAL engine sounds. The actual engine sounds can be further enhanced by an exhaust of your choosing, Numeric Cables, removal of sound insulation (a La lightweight package or GT3), stiffer engine and trans mounts, or any other number of methods. Or, perhaps further isolate the cabin by adding sound insulation.
