Default 991.2 GTS vs. 992 S

Hey all, today I had a blast driving the 992 S at the PEC Atlanta. I’ve had my 991.2 GTS for roughly 1 month (nearing 2 weeks in the shop for water pump failure…). The interior/PCM of the 992 was hands down over and above the 991.2 IMO, and it felt faster in a straight line. My question for those more experienced: I drove the 992 relatively hard and in manners I would never drive my GTS on public roads. How close is the GTS to the 992 S in overall performance (acceleration/handling)? Could I expect the GTS to behave similarly to the 992 S at speed? More so, less so? Would love any first-hand knowledge from those more experienced than me. I really wanted to understand and feel the car on the track so that I could be more familiar with my GTS on normal roads. Curious if the GTS is similar/better/worse than the 992 S at “limits”.

Thanks all!

I think the performance is very similar between a .2 GTS and a 992 S. I believe there are going back to 992 GTSs soon since they were not previously available. For frame of reference I have been to the Porsche Track experience in Birmingham AL a number of times. They previously used .2 GTSs and switched to 992 S. From talking with the instructors they said the cars are very close in performance with a slight edge going to the 992. They run The S with PCCBs and 4 wheel steer not options you see very much out in the wild especially the steering. They also seem to think 992 has a little extra electronic voodo. I think on the road you won’t come close hitting the limit of either car. Your GTS is a more special car than a 992 S and will probably hold it’s value a little better over time. I know in this day and age everyone wants all the new tech but it really doesn’t contribute to the driving experience.

FWIW, with a tune the 991.2 GTS smokes the 992 C4S with amateur drivers.

I pulled hard on a 992 C4S and was able to get around it without much effort in my 991.2 GTS. I have no idea how proper drivers will do with the same vehicles. This doesn't answer your question in any capacity but is a metric. The new 992 GTS will be a beast.

The power difference between my 991.2 GTS was obvious enough that they knew I was not 'stock'. That being said we were both novice drivers with myself having more track time (in other cars). Even in the corners I was gaining and itching to pass.

My colleague is waiting for his 992 GTS (manual transmission) to arrive this summer and it will be a blast. Curious to see how much faster it will be than my 991.2 GTS.

The comparison data is readily available from Porsche. The 992S has many improvements over the 991.2 GTS and IMHO out performs it in almost every category just like comparing a 997.2 to a 991.1. Think of it as an improved 991.2. The chassis, electronics, turn in, turbos, charge air system and injectors were major improvements. Many of the changeover valves went electronic. As you note, the 991.2 had an interior designed in 2011 so it was overdue for a refresh. I test drove a 992 S for two days which included some very hard driving. Following the test drive, I traded my 991 right away. Not trying to argue with anyone and realize many on here are 991.2 fans but the objective data to compare the two is readily available.

Good info but same tune you put on 991.2 can be put on the 992 for an apples to apples comparison.

Performance wise a 992 S is not much of a difference from a .2 GTS despite all the changes. I think if you look at the published data they are identical. Now if you are talking a 991.2 S then there is a much bigger difference. At the end of the day a GTS will always be a more desirable spec I’m my opinion.

No doubt a tuned 992 S/GTS will destroy a 991.2 GTS tuned.

As I said my example was just a waste of bandwidth

992.1 is ugly and ~140# heavier compared to the 991.2.

Porsche isn’t in the business of iterating to worse designs. Objectively every new generation addressed shortcomings of the previous while modernizing the platform. This means any 911 will provide a phenomenal driving experience that represents a gold standard of performance among its contemporaries.
