Default Oh no, I took my car to a DE

Hi all!

So I finally took my 911 to a PCA DE event and I'm hooked.

After the event during my drive home I thought to myself "what's the point? why drive my 911 on the streets, when I really her on a track!".

I've always wanted a 911 and finally got one last year. The reason I wanted one was because I knew they were awesome machines, but I feel it's pointless to just drive around on the streets (speed limits, pot hole (I live in Quebec), cops, tickets, you get my drift.

So I was thinking, sell my 2013 C4S Cabrio and get a 2014-2017 718 S used mainly for DE events.
Or should I just keep my car and use it? I contemplate selling it because I feel a less expensive car would be just as fun.

Love to hear everyone's thoughts on this!

Welcome to the rabbit hole. Alice says, Hi!

I hold very different opinions to most. When I bought my 911 and expressed interest in tracking, I could not believe the forceful opinions on, I should by a Miata and learn in that.

Two letters. NO ! You drive a miata. I’m driving my 911.

I didn’t buy a Miata. I never expressed any interest in one ever. The finest sports car on the planet is a 911. Thats what i wanted, thats what I bought, and i am sure as hell, thats what i wanted to learn to drive fast in at the track.

Fast forward to now, Ferrari Pista’s, and McLarens and GT2-RS struggle to run with me. Not sure that would have been the case wasting time in a miata.

Oh I love 911’s so let me buy a completely different car and track that. NO!

I love my 911. I drive it every chance i get. At the track, on country runs, out to dinner. Life is too short to waste time in a miata. Get out and drive your 911.

Imagine one day standing tall before the man, and he says, Son, I blessed you with a 911 and you chose to waste your life in a miata? Please explain. 🤣

I’d make that switch. Porsche mind engine cars are magic on track. And a coupe is preferable to a cab. The cab is fine for occasional track fun, but if you really get the bug, the 718 is a better choice for someone wanting to get to an advanced level. Nice problem to have. Good luck making your choice.

Since you're brand new to DE's, continue enjoying the cabriolet. Ride it our rest of the season and see how many events you'll actually end up doing. If you are still crazy about it, dive into a different car.

718 S is a great car from what I understand and I considered one many times.

Less expensive and less powerful car will still be plenty of fun at the track. The key is to having fun is making sure you own something reliable.

I am tracking a 991.2 GTS. Advanced/Instructor level- I know I will eventually get into something a fraction of the price. Absolutely amazing cars but its more car than I want to be tracking. Older Cayman S is high on my list.

If you are serious about DE, 981 GTS might even be a better proposition than 718 S. Either way, you can go wrong with a mid-engine car.

Enjoy and be safe!

I hear you. I took my 981 BS to the track, and have been obsessed with a CS or even CGT4 since. I am going to hold out a year or two with what I have before spending more than on consumables. Plan to get a house with a 3 car, or maybe an outbuilding in a handful of years. And I love my drop top on mountain drives, more than track driving if forced to choose. Basically, that’s why I bought my car. After a hard top, hopefully with buckets, it’s a roll bar, lower arms, cooling upgrades, a whole new rabbit hole. Better to be sure I am going to go deep before that financial commitment.

Thanks for the replies!

I wanted to capitalize on the price these cars can demand now. Although if I fetched a higher price for my 911, the 718 would also be priced higher.

Right, lots of additional costs on the vehicle itself post-purchase!

Wonder if going even further back would make sense, like mid to late 2000.

I tracked my cayman and it was amazing.

but since you just got into it I say track your 911 for a few years and then get into something you really are ready for. The 911 can take a lot of abuse.

I kid I kid! It always kills me when I see people complain about, "has it been tracked?" on BAT and other places...

Ha. Looking back to the DE days followed by a bit of racing followed by midlife…

I'd have skipped the DEs in various Porsches and did some schools in a Spec Miata or similar. Or karts. In other words, I'd have cut to the chase. Especially as there's that other thing: seasons of life. I can see having more time for track days or racing again somewhere down the road, so those windows come and go as our priorities shift. If you're in one of the windows, and were I in your shoes…I just might sell a nice street car to do more on the track. If it has to be DE and it has to be something you can drive on the street, I'd look at the lightest car you can live with…ideally closer to 2000-2500lbs than 3000-3500lbs. Such cars are out there, and your consumables budget will thank you later.

YMMV, and probably will! As someone said, a choice like this is a nice problem to have!

Uh oh. Down the rabbit hole you go Have fun. I went through that with sport bikes and am content to drive my 911 just on the street. Sport bikes were more dangerous but cheaper

Default Money thing

If you have the cash to race a 911 go for it but I don't see how a boxster would cost any less. The new Zed 400 just got released for 43k. That would be my choice to autox.
