Default GoPro Suction Mount - Front Bumper?

Hi!

I have a new (to me) 991.1 GT3, and I want to take videos of my canyon runs. I'm going to order the tow hook mount to capture footage, but also want to get an exterior camera to capture the exhaust from the rear of the car. Would it be safe to put a suction cup mount over paint? Or would that cause damage?

Many photographers and videographers use suction cup setups and booms to hang their expensive equipment off cars.

In these cases, glass is preferred. Steel if glass isn't available. Aluminum if steel isn't available. Plastic is a last resort that is generally not used for booms.

For something like a gopro on a finger mount? Plastic is fine. Just make sure it's secure. Consider a safety wire wrapped around a license plate screw, so if the suction cup gives out over a bump or in the wet, it'll at least dangle from your rear bumper. The official gopro cup mount is decently secure. The cheap knockoffs are trash.

I used a Zuos 4.5” suction cup and a “selfie stick” on the rear window. It’s a lot more interesting than the bumper cam, from my experience.

This is the particular suction cup I purchased:

I put a treefrog suction mount bike rack on the roof of my 991.2 with a heavy mountain bike in seriously strong wind. No issues. Just make sure the surface and the suction cup are super clean otherwise you could get micro abrasions on the paint.

That top video angle looks great though - try that first!

Got it. Ok! Good call on the safety wire. Don't want to lose my camera!

Good call on the clean surfaces. Thanks for your reply!

I'd also recommend using the waterproof housing as an extra layer of protection in case things come loose.

The waterproof case usually won’t save the cameras if they fall at speed. When I used GoPro cameras for exterior footage in the past I opted for better sound instead of safety by using a foam cover. Without it, the exterior audio is unusable in most cases, especially as the speed increases. However, wireless Bluetooth mic taped to the rear bumper gives the best balance of exhaust note and tire sounds.
