I've been trying to fix the dash squeaks which turned out to be the fuel tank. I used a small piece of wood to wiggle the fuel tank and was able to replicate the exact squeaks I hear from under the dash.
This might be a temporary fix but the squeak is gone and I'm very relieved. I've read that the squeak goes away when the tank is near empty. I've filled the gas full and still no more squeak.
There is a tiny gap in between the fuel tank and a black metal frame or bar. I squeezed one of those 3m scotch felt pad in between while prying little and that's it.
I've driven about 50 miles just cruising around with full tank and no squeaks! I guess it does put enough tension on the tank to stop the squeak. Puts smile back to my face!
In my 981 there are two conditions needed to cause the squeaks: a full tank and high outside temperature. Not sure if that is true for the 991, but it wouldn't surprise me if they reappear in the summer.

Just wanted to confirm that's the picture of the master cylinder in your picture so I know what I am looking at, and where to place that sticky pad.

Mine does it all the time as long as the tank is full, so the outside air temperature has no effect on it...so no break for me during the winters
I did the fix @pkay781 suggested, and it fixed the issue. I also want to note that I climbed into the trunk, and can see that the back of the gas tank curls up, and wraps around that metal bar as well. So with one hand I pushed down on the tank, and in the same motion pushed another couple more pads in. I drove about 100 miles just now with a full tank and no noise at all. This 8 yrs issue has finally been resolved. Thanks to @pkay781 and the forum.
The tank squeak is covered by a factory bulletin. The squeak occurs when the original felt pads move out of position. The bulletin is linked in post 13 in this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/attachme...838d1623807035. There is also a video and discussion of alternative solutions.
