Default KW Clubsport 3-Way’s at Buttonwillow Raceway

E-Motion Engineering installed and tuned KW Clubsport’s on my 2017 Carrera S and I finally got to track test them last week.

I have 13 days and 400 laps at Buttonwillow. I’m comfortable there Previously I was running stock SPASM with the DSC controller set at GT3 Touring. High speed transitions were sketchy, with a lot of body roll and the need to be really smooth with the steering.

The new suspension is confidence inspiring. I set a new pb on my 11th lap. And the 4 (total) 1:54’s I had previously run took 4 track days. I ran 4 in the first 3 sessions Wednesday. The Garmin Catalyst looks at the best segments throughout the day and comes up with an “optimal”.

Ready for Buttonwillow

The Garmin is nice!

Getting “air” coming up the driveway. Slightly stiffer than stock.

Optimal now is 1:52.63 on day old tires. 1:52xxxx is the new goal!

The KW’s come with 90nm front springs and 190 rears. Emotion swapped out the rears for a softer spring between the GT3 and RS rates. On the street the ride is nice except for low speed rough roads. It was surprisingly compliant over the hi-speed curbs (Bus stop) at Buttonwillow.

Good stuff, thanks for the info!

Do you think the Catalyst is worth it?

I like it a lot. It's a good timer, video is decent, and it's easy to review laps between sessions on the Garmin itself. It's "coaching" is based on segment times during your previous laps. So you have to experiment with braking points and apexes to get feedback ( or just make mistakes). Each session will have 3 "opportunities" with the time saved by executing the opportunity properly. I like the pieced together optimal lap video. It's a good review for the track if it's been a while.

Stiff suspension and stiff chassis to hang the wheel in the air Awesome update with the KWs. You're creeping in on GT3 times. Yeah, the stock spring rates are way too soft for serious track use. I first heard about the Garmin Catalyst sometime last year, it looks pretty user friendly.

The KW’s perform!
I finished my trifecta of local tracks Wednesday, and now have new PB’s at all.
Buttonwillow 153.95, -.34secs
Chuckwalla 153.26, -2.1 secs
Big Willow 127.98, -1.4secs

I’m a lot more consistent with the track setup. 5 PB laps in one session

Big chunk taken out at chuckwalla! I figure because that track is a lot of cornering relative to the others? I've done it once and lots of fun. But it's so far out there for me.

I think it was mostly new tires at Chuckwalla, and good conditons. I think I'll end up with 1.5 - 2 sec off everywhere. Need a 1:36 at Laguna Seca!

Nice job fsmich; you are at the pointy end for sure. I'll wave at you from the back and when you pass me.

Did you do much suspension tuning at the track and among the different road courses? Did the 3R's end up cording on the inside on you?

Congrats . I have all the E-Motion shim adjustable bars.
My coilovers are Tractive so I retain the DSC with a custim map from Tom.

I initially wanted more of a Targa type car, so i started with 75 up front. But i think i always knew deep down i would increase it, so i asked for dampers that would handle 100.
At the track the 75 would fall over and light up the rrar inside wheel. So i up graded it.

I am currently 100 front and 150 rear. I think this is spot on until I increase downforce.

I’m interested in what your rear is? 130-140?

I had KWCS on my M4. KW tend to over spring. They were 110/180. It used to skip and step out all the time.

I dropped it back to 100/160 and it was way better.

i am thinking of going even stiffer in front to close the gap between front and rear. Keeping in mind a Cup car is 260/260 so it is 1:1.

GTS 33/108
GT3 45/120
4.0. 100/150
3RS. 100/160
2RS. 120/220
cup. 260/260

If I put a big swan neck wing on i will increase rear to 160.

I am thinking of maybe 120 front first.

Thoughts?

I have done zero tuning. They come delivered in "performance", Emotion tuned them to his springs and a softer "street" version. I had planned to stiffen them at CVR, but the rear controls are hard to get at. I chickened out, did not want to mess up a good thing.
My Goodyear 3r's are almost slicks now, with even wear and no inside cording. They have almost no street miles. I go out at 25f/26r cold, run them gently 2 laps to warm up. Then bleed to run 30/32 hot.

The KW's come with 90/190. I have switched out 130's on the rears. I think your setup is perfect for mostly track, but still liveable street ride. Here is a Tractive review at 130/200.

I went back to Buttonwillow with the tires I used at Chuckwalla and Willow, and shaved a little more time off. Now 1.1 secs faster than old suspension.

These are my rear Goodyear 3r’s getting traded in for new rubber after 3 days, 14 sessions.

Default Buttonwillow 1:52.61

I did my 4th day with the KW suspension at Buttonwillow on 3/16, with Speed District. New front 245 Trofeo's, rear 305 Goodyear 3R's with 7sessions. This tire setup is courtesy of Tom Arter, thanks!

Weather for the first 2 sessions was perfect and 60deg. Had 4 laps that were new personal bests. And the KW clubsports now have a 1.68 sec advantage over the SPASM/DSC suspension at Buttonwillow.
The 720s at the end of the video is FAST
