Default Scanners

I need a scanner to reset my oil service light. Seems like the icarsoft v2.0 is used by quite a few members.

A few on RL use the Autel Mx808. What features outside of the service light reset do you guys use that have the MX808?

Any other units to consider that can reset the service lights?

Thanks for chiming in.

Foxwell NT 510 and/or Foxwell NT530 and Durametric. Read internet reviews on all. Many negative reviews floating around about iCarsoft and Foxwell concerning software updates and lack of customer support. Others have had no issues. Many threads on RL concerning all of them.

The foxwell and icarsoft are both fine for (and more or less limited to) oil/service reset, battery reprogramming, and airbag resets.

The foxwell 530 and maybe even the 510 might be able to read specific sensors from specific modules, but that's something you'll want to check. It might only do OBD or maybe CAN exposed data, like a $10 bluetooth dongle and Torque on your smartphone. Even if it does let you read out specific module sensor information, that doesn't help you do anything unless you're trying to troubleshoot a very specific problem, and even then, it's the same as taking a multimeter to the contacts of the switch or sensor you're diagnosing. It's all read-only.

The MX808 I believe is in the same category as the foxwells.

The autel maxisys line (906, for example) are bi-directional devices. What this means is you can send programming-like commands to the modules. The main feature I can come up with here offhand is the ability to force operation/calibration of things like the rear spoiler, headlight adjustment, front louvers, front fans, engine fans, and most importantly, the PDK calibration service -- which is markedly not the same as the song and dance turn-off-the-aircon placebo procedure that's floating around.

PIWIS II or PIWIS III . . . more expensive, but worth it if you do alot of DIY

for roughly the same price you can get something like a Autel MS906BT, have it work for tons of other cars, receive updates, and have the awesome benefit of being legal

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I was not aware that there was such a device other than a PIWIS that could calibrate the rear wheel steering, PDK, e-brake, etc for a Porsche.

Warning, AUTEL charges $695.00 per-year for keeping the subscription active.

All high-end online features like ECU, Coding, etc. will be disabled (besides the well known software updates) if you don't have an active subscription, making your device mostly worthless.

AUTEL WILL DISABLE KEY FEATURES WITHOUT A CURRENT SUBSCRIPTION.!!

Below is AUTEL's response on the MK906BT, and where I am not able to use key features any more because it requires an online connection that can happen only with a valid subscription.

"We are really sorry that is Autel's marketing strategy, for all the Autel diagnostic tablets, there are annual fee. Only advanced functions such as ECU Coding/ Programming functions will be limited if not renewed because to code/ program a new ECU, that requires access to Autel online server, if the one doesn't renew the software, he can't access to Autel server data to process the coding or programming. The subscription fee is charged by Autel. "

For the entry to mid level DIYer the icarsoft is likely the best choice and will cover all of their needs.
The system is practical as it's self contained and will cover diagnostics as it does connect to sensor output for modules.
What it will not do is coding or actuations, for this you would want a PIWIS.

Oh heck I'll just post a link to a video I made doing an oil service reset with my Icarsoft POR v2.0. It's really easy. I may not do everything I may possibly need but I think it checks off most of the boxes for me. I haven't done anything else with it yet but for <$150 it seems like a decent value.

Autel 808Mx does not require a subscription. Has a great range of functions for its price range. Works with almost any vehicle of the last 15 yrs.

Anyone have a recommendation for a cheaper scanner that has programming abilities? Such as setting the spoiler deployment minimum speed, adjusting the oil temp gauge, etc?

I know Matco Maximus and Autel MS960BT can...

Can confirm Snap On models 'Solus' and 'Triton' scanners cannot code our cars. They only support VW and Audi coding.

I'm going through hell to try to find a shop with an active subscription to one of these.
