Default Engine too hot message (250 degree temp)

So I had gotten this message in 15 mins of stop and go traffic. I noticed around the same time that the A/C wasn't blowing cool air anymore.

Do I have a COV issue?

I was too afraid to drive home after seeing this message and had the car towed to the closest Porsche dealer. Hopefully they'll give better info on what's going on in the morning.

It is most likely water pump failure. It is quite common.

Thanks - Now that you mention that, I went back to look at my pics and noticed there was a large puddle by the exhaust and where the water pump would be located.

Dealer opens in 4 hours, hope they can get her up and running soon

I like that your tow truck driver has those race ramps.

Sorry to hear. Yes, the message you got + large puddle under the rear sounds like a water pump (again). The good news is you caught it early. Hope it gets resolved at the dealer fast. The linked threads should have more info about the part(s) that are typically replaced, including the water pump and components associated. Good luck!

My 991 is the .1 from 2013

I saw the sister thread for 991.2 having these issues... did it apply to 991.1 also?

No. Nowhere near as frequent. Your car is 8 years old. All water pumps fail. You had a good run.

In the thread below, it was mentioned that Porsche is extending the warranty for the water pumps for 10 years. No other details available. But reasonably good news. Better would be to build a water pump that doesn’t fail within the first few years.

When does Porsche recommend replacing the water pump as preventative maintenance?

We haven't seen that with the 991. That was/is more of a 996 and 997 thang. And that recommendation came mostly from places like Flat 6 Innovations and L&N Engineering.

Would be good to replace maybe at 6 years since a failure results in higher cost likely due to valve block. Just add that to the list.

So update on this. Turns out my engine coolant cap wasn't all the way shut/sealed. Drove it today thru traffic/highway for an hour and the engine temp stayed at 190 the whole time.

and definitely DON'T go past the 'click' or you will end up buying a new cap!
