Default 991.2 GTS: Warm the tyres, warm the heart

So, without wanting to endure a collective 'duh' from everyone...

Today I took my GTS for its first proper drive. I'd not loved the P Zeros for lack of traction, but noted they were inflated at the low or comfort range at 30/35 F/R. "Good" for handling and grip, I was led to believe, but my tyres and car seemed to have a lot of arguments about traction, even at very modest speeds. After several other cars, I found it a bit odd that they have pressure but not temperature monitors, but I am very aware of the "ideal gas laws' from Messrs Boyle, Charles and co.

Consequently I was very excited when I saw the pressure rise up to 33/38 front and rear, after perhaps 30 mins of driving. And the whole traction thing that I had been struggling with was transformed. Even launch control only induced a modicum of traction control intervention; I don't and will never have timing gear but it genuinely felt low 3's for the 0-100 dash. Between the linear torque curve and the subliminal shifting of the PDK box (I know, I am cheating), it felt unreasonably fast. Progress into triple figures was relentless.

I had tried a Turbo S on track and it felt uncomfortably fast; this confirmed it. In my opinion, you really don't need anything quicker than this. There is an elusive number of 350-500 bhp, which depending on the weight of your vehicle, is perfect for maximum enjoyment on something twisty (not autobahns). The GTS is arguably, if anything, slightly overpowered, if you want to really drive with spirit. Perhaps now I can see what the Carrera T guys are on about.

Also, for the first time, the RWD/Rear Engine choice I made was vindicated. A playful shimmy from the hips, the confidence inspiring throttle correction across a tightening sweeper. Subtle reminders, but not intimidating. So good.

So yes, warming the tyres makes a colossal difference. Pirelli is forgiven, although I still will go Michelin for the next round.

Glad you are happy again. Some screens in the bumper will help protect the expensive bits that live deep in the gaping holes.

I agree with you, (at least in my hands) there is no need to go over 500hp.

I installed the Zunsport grills on my 991: https://www.zunsport.com/en/porsche-grilles&filter=192. A few other threads between these and Rennline exist. Beautiful GTS though (I debated between Sapphire Blue and Carrara White on a 991.1 GTS, and ended up with the latter).

Rennline. Bumper comes off. Screwed in from rear. They will sit put and look most factory in my opinion.

Love that blue! Try the Zunnsport front grills. They're located in the UK but it took only two days for them to arrive at my door in the States. Supper easy install. Enjoy the ride.

How did you get that carbon effect on the horizontal running light/indicator?

I think Jack meant Rennline. Either Rennline or Zunnsport, the bumper needs to come off to install.

+1 for Rennline version.

I've been looking at both, and to be honest the bumper off treatment for the Rennline is quite unappealing. Maybe I am soft or lazy or something. Zunnsport is put on from the front, which is a huge bonus both in putting them on, and taking them off for cleaning etc.

No carbon fiber. I guess it's just the lighting in the photo.
