I’m a new Carrera T owner and I love it! I have driven non Porsche manuals for the last 10 years or so.

Does anyone ever shift from 1st and end up accidentally shifting into 4th gear instead of 2nd gear? This has happened to me on a few occasions. I never really had that happen in my other car.

That's one of the downsides of Porsche's layout of the 7MT.

There are too many forward gears .... R 1 3 5 7.

Should have copied the C7 7MT layout, where the R is below the 7.

that’s never happened to me. also, it’s impossible to miss shift you can’t get into 7th gear unless you’re already in 5th or 6th, its locked out.

Never happened to me from 1st to 4th but after installing mu numeric short shifter, it occasionally happens from 6th to 4th because of the spring tension. It’s not a problem with the shifter though. It just takes a little extra force, especially with the 2mm spring.

Not so far.
Had OEM shifter first 1.5 years and added Numeric shifter and cables last summer. Transformative experience over stock, at least in the base C4.

Shifter and I think that would be impossible. It was like $250 and maintains stock feel.

Agree on the R. I know it's just how the manufacturer places it, but I always felt the manuals where the R is forward and not pulling back is counter. You should pull back to go back and reverse. I have owned mostly Japanese manuals and most are back reverse, but I can see myself getting messed up with R forward. But the push to engage reverse usually prevents any misgearing....

Congrats on the new car—the Carrera T is fabulous.

Could be you, could be shifter out of adjustment, could be a close multi-H gate—though I think Porsche got it right with a 6MT layout + R on one side (normal) and 7 on the other with the lockout (novel).

I might see if you can find someone else with a 991.2 7MT to try theirs (even with the engine off), or have them try yours—but I suspect its more likely that you're just getting used to a new car. Enjoy it!

The only car I ever had an issue going from 1 to 2 in was the C5 Z06 - it had some weird mechanism that more-or-less forced you from 1 to 4 without some effort.

The gates on this 7 MT are totally fine, IMO.

When I first read the title of this thread I thought it could have been so much worse (i.e. a money-shift thread)!

When I went from a 981 to a 991 it did take a bit of getting used to for me as well.

It helps to pretend 7th gear doesn't exist - I've used it maybe 3 times over 6 years of both 991.1 and 991.2 ownership.

I’ve never had that problem on mine. I think the shifter is rather amazing in that having 5 gates up, 3 down, I can’t recall ever feeling unsure of what gear I’m selecting. I’ve felt far less certain on other cars with fewer gates to pick from. Like others said, you’ll get more used to it. Enjoy the car!

Sounds like muscle memory. If you are easy/gentle + slow with the shifting the shifter tends to return to center pretty abruptly. I think it may be happening and you are just going straight down into 4th instead of 2nd.

The shifter naturally defaults to the 3/4 gate. To go from first to second, just ease the shifter ever so slightly to the left as you move back to 2nd.
