my 991.2 PDK 911 S 25k miles "clunks" when downshifting from 2nd to 1st. it's not loud but it's annoying. Local Porsche shop (not dealer) says "they all do that." is that true?

Yes....best to just let it auto shift into 1st when your speed hits near zero. I paddle all other gears, but never paddle into first when downshifting due to the clunkiness.

There is a procedure the service shop can trigger called (by me) “recalibration”. The process has the car re adjust the distance between disk and press and significantly reduces the “clunck”.
What is weird about it is many shops will state they don’t know what you are talking about. Not sure why. In any case, had it done in a mid miles GTI, mid miles Audi and a higher miles 997 and it always worked. Not sure how long it took but probably 20 minutes. You can hear the car engaging and releasing the clutch while stationary and after a while it stops and you are good to go.
Best.

sure I’ll bite
reason 1 I want to.
reason 2 fear of lawsuit
reason 3 it’s complicated and I don’t feel like typing that much
I’ve had a pdk replacement (cpo that received a reman unit, yes that’s allowable) and had the op’s issue.

what year is your car? Since PDK replacement, all is ok? PDK replaced under warranty?

Like Al.Fresco, I paddle all the gears except 2 to 1. First because it just seems unnecessary since you're almost at a stop when you would need 1st and the auto will take it there when you stop. Second, it "seems" hard on the trans. AND, I don't like the slight clunk sound. Just my two cents...

The transmission in my current car can’t be compared with the .1 tranny. Current 17 .2 with 22k seems perfect through and through.
I believe the cpo might have been tracked hard thus possibly why it was a fail.

If you want any more info pm me I’ll give a phone number and we could chat. My issues with pdk are what they are and me being a manual guy bough another pdk because it’s just so good. 4 year warranty runs out in a few days and finalizing a 6/60 fidelity platinum mainly for pdk cost. Hopefully I’m wasting my money. To date not even a rattle. .2 pdk shifts are one of the favorite things about this car, I again was a hard core manual guy but finally learned to work with not against the pdk. I’ll soon be 64 and my manual box is checked. My neighbor has a low miles 996 manual and we occasionally drive together. He gave me a lift the other day and asked if I’d like to drive the 996. Ok I’m spoiled, shifting seemed like such work. The negative of pdk is that after hours reading every post I can find on the subject these are wonderful but disposable parts. Many bits and pieces needed for repair are either rare or non-existent. Stay in warranty or hope for the best or be prepared to bend over and be told we can’t fix it. You then will most likely get a remanufactured unit that was busted shipped back to Stuttgart and fixed for 50 bucks. When my car was traded one dealer clearly said she nice I had my transmission replaced my car was devalued. Another dealer looked at my car having a replaced transmission as a good thing and gave me 100% of what I had paid for the beautiful.1 so he got my business. Pays to shop around. Getting my 4 year maintenance for 1/3 price of another Porsche dealer. Strangely a dealer I’ve bought 2 of my cars from.

Thanks for your reply. I’m 65 and I on occasion lust after the manual mostly from watching too many YouTube videos. I guess I need two Porsches
my car is certified for another year or so . I haven’t done nearly the research as you on PDKs so I appreciate the info!

My 991.2 S clunks too, my 991.1 S did the same, all PDK 911s do...
welcome to dual clutch.
can complain but I’m convinced they all do it. Porsche dealership says it’s normal..

While the .2 PDK is much better (programming?)... It still clunks into first if you do it yourself in manual mode or come to a quick stop in D. Under normal driving, in D it's smooth.. Pretty much what every else is saying in this thread.
Not sure what Timbo went through, but I highly doubt someone will file suit against him. Good luck!
