Default 2013 911 S manual transmission SMOG

I stopped by 2 STAR certified SMOG stations and both informed me that they are not able to SMOG my 911 because they were not able to get to the engine compartment. These places probably have never seen a 911 drive up to their stations. DO most of you just take your vehicles to the Porsche Dealerships for the SMOG inspections and if so, what is the cost and time they take?

Had mine smogged last week and had to remove the fan lid so he could technically say he inspected everything.

Happy to recommend a Porsche friendly smog station in San Francisco for whomever needs it. PM me.

I just had this issue in LA with the exact same spec car. I removed my fans in the engine compartment and that was enough to satisfy his needs to "see" the engine. If I didn't do that he said he couldn't SMOG my car. IF you are in LA I can tell you the place I took my car too. Removing the fans is super easy.

And, to add insult to injury, you can elect to not operate or register your vehicle and PAY THEM for the privilege !

I did a couple of searches on how to remove the fan engine cover, but couldn't really come up with anything concrete (or my search-fu is weak). Can you provide some details or share a link or 2?

I suspect I will run into this issue as well, so I want to be prepared!

The previous time I smogged my 987.2 the guy didn't care (STAR station). He asked, "the engine is covered?" I said, "yeah it's mid-engine, do you need to see it?" and the response was "no it's fine." The next time I went back (2 years later) he said he had to take a look at the engine. No tools for me to use, so I had to drive home, and take off the cover and drive back. When there I had to take off the metal cover (so I didn't drive with it off and kill myself with exhaust). Took literally a 2-second peek and was done. It's like they think I swapped the motor or something. When they plug in the OBD2 scanner it tells them everything. Though I suppose if you were REALLY good you could rig a swapped motor to work with the factory ECU!

What a cash grab. 5mins of work for $70. CA should just sell an OBD2 module with a phone app for us to 'self smog' at home. Would certainly be cheaper than giving them $70 every other year per car! But then they have to keep the SMOG stations in business.

I've had my stock M3 flat out rejected at the smog stations. No explanation, just won't do it. Most corrupt backwards state I've ever lived in.
