Default Just realized my CPO expires tomorrow. What, Me Worry?

SO, should I worry and look to Fidelity or not? It has been a great car, 77k miles with little to no issues.

Nah. My warranty expired a year ago and I rolled the dice. Cars are bulletproof.

So far this past year the car cost me a few hundred bucks for an annual service. Apart from that, all good.

your comment there suggests that you already know the answer. 77,000 miles should give you a pretty good idea of what you can expect from your car. With that said, how much is a little extra peace of mind worth to you?

For me, I was able to purchase a 10 year / 100k Fidelity platinum plan for just over $4k. Hard deal to pass up in my case. Difference is I was on the tail end of the original factory warranty with under 10k miles. Extending yours would cost a lot more I’m sure.

good luck.

Always need a warranty for these cars, especially newer ones. If you’re a PDK, just another reason to. One issue will probably cost as much as an extended warranty. Just get one and enjoy.

A few weeks before my CPO warranty expired, I debated the same thing. The cars generally are very reliable and doing the math, only something like an engine failure or PDK failure would make the extended warranty seem worth-it to me. (Anything else, just paying to fix it out of pocket would be cheaper.) So I had the dealer give my car a thorough once over before the CPO expired and paid out of pocket for an early PDK fluid change. I asked them to save some fluid and to examine it for any signs of odd transmission wear. Everything seemed normal with the oil and everything else checked out (they did a few things like replace bad engine cover hydraulic struts) so I just let the CPO expire without getting an extended warranty.

How many of the 77k miles were yours and how well did you maintain it over those miles? As a very general rule, I think that most modern cars are good up to 50k, and then after that maintenance becomes the main variable in how reliable a car will be. The 991.1 engines seem to be holding up over time. I don't think there are a huge number of very high mileage cars out there at the moment, but as they approach a decade old we would have heard reports of regular failure in the forums if there was a design issue (such at the IMS).

I think this just comes down to personal taste for gambling. The house always wins on average. And it’s not by a small margin.

I have bought a couple of these warranties in the past.

Once I “won” by a little and the car needed a lot of repairs. Once the house won by a lot and the car needed no repairs. Most friends and family seem to be somewhere in between but never more than the warranty cost them.

Of course, catastrophic repair bills can happen. But for me, spending thousands on extended warranties every few years for daily drivers and weekend toys is not sustainable.

In the end, it’s a question of risk tolerance. My car is perfectly maintained and I’m confident that on balance, I don’t need an extended warranty. I also don’t have PDK.

Something to consider, an extended warranty for a car with 77k miles is going to be prohibitively expensive since its mainly based on mileage. I wouldn't be surprised it was $10-15k for an additional 1-2 years of coverage. Not worth it at that point.

If my car was PDK I would, because $25k is not something I'd like to pay out of pocket. It most likely won't happen. 99%+ are not going to have issues, but if it does, it'll be expensive.

Extended warranties bring peace of mind. As long as you realize that's what you're paying for, they're worth it. If you're expecting to come out with more repair bills covered than the warranty costs, probably best to roll the dice (assuming you COULD cover it financially if the worst happened), or just move on to a newer car every few years.

Default 77k miles

Im gonna say the return on a warranty is not worth it. Call and ask but Im guessing 15k for 2 years. The pdk is probably 8 to 10k off ebay. If you have a MT def not worth it. I have a 10/100 purchased at 7k miles for 4800. Cost is mileage based. Not sure I would be comfortable financially owning a high mileage Porsche with no warranty but everyones risk acceptance level should be based on their finances.

Life is too short to worry about stuff like this.

If it is truly bothersome or if your enjoyment of the car is going to be hampered then sell it and move on.

I'd be more worried for those with low mileage examples that just don't get driven.

I had one on my ex-F10 BMW V8 and thank the Lord I did. What a POS that was.

I don't have one on my current C2 and don't plan on it. Assuming nothing catastrophic goes wrong, I just plan for the annual maintenance and service items on the scheduled checklist and go from there. Sometimes it's more/less than budgeted but oh well. I am about to hit 56k and there have no big issues in the service history so I drive it quickly and almost daily, and echo others' sentiments of I'd be much more wary of a low-low mileage car.
