Well guys, I gave up on the online update working and just installed the latest map update via the huge 25 GB download already mentioned elsewhere extracted to a 64 GB FAT32-formatted USB drive.
I would prefer to install a map update just for my country but in the end was forced to wait 30 minutes for the whole European region 2021/2022.
I believe this update works without any "hacks" because I have a valid Porsche Connect subscription. It's not the same as the original feature but I just gave up on waiting.
Will let you know if I get any more background info.

Here in Italy got similar e-mail from Porsche yesterday, which says that a sw upgrade will be needed at a porsche center.
I scheduled it for November 25th. And they also told me about a "Lifetime" updating of the maps ...
Mah...
Gone to the Porsche dealer....
They done what porsche italy says to do....
I found that a map update is made to version ECE 2020/2021
but the on line update still not working...
disappointed, I will send another e-mail to customer care.
Hello all! I got a reply from the infotainment developer that the server issue fix is finally planned during this week.
As I have already updated the maps using a thumb drive can someone please check if the download now starts and no longer hangs at 0 B/s?
Anyone check if the map updates now download correctly?
the 19th of December I receive the following e-mail from [smartmobility@it.porsche.com]:
Dear Mr.
we refer to and follow up on your request of 06 December 2021 regarding the inability to proceed with the online updates of the on-board computer (PCM). Thank you for contacting us.
Our technical department has informed us that in the next few days you will receive a popup indicating a new map update. The map update should now work as expected.
Should you encounter the same situation, we kindly invite you to contact us again.

From then no popup and map update still not working....
Do have a 991.1 with PCM 3.1 software version 4.63. My Porsche Center send me an email to offer me a softwareupgrade/refresh to my map data.
Das Kartenupdate für die genannten Modelle erhalten Sie jetzt bei uns ab einem Preis von EUR 353,42* bis EUR 472,41* (je nach Option und Ausstattung Ihres Porsche).
This is a joke to ask for up to 472€ for a map update. My opinion.
My question: I went through the PCM but could not find any info on how old my map data is nor which version the map data is. Can somebody please guide me to a way to find out aka what buttons to press to get to that info menu.
For 472€ you can buy the aftermarket AppleCarplay Kit for my 991 I guess…
I asked my local dealer and they told me the online map update functionality does not actually work in the 991.2, even though it says I have a subscription. They stated that they could do the update, but it would cost $1500 and not worth it. I also reached out to Porsche Connect online, and they told me to check that my privacy settings are off and try again. I haven't checked, but highly doubt that is the problem. I'll report back if it ends up working.
My map update actually worked today! I'm not sure if Porsche did anything on their backend (don't think so), but I think the difference this time might have been that my phone was not connected to the car. The phone did connect accidentally during the download and when it did I noticed that the download paused at 0KB/s. As soon as I disconnected my phone it continued to download around 650KB/s. Here's the screen confirmation that showed up after the update completed the install.
