Default Smart Top for 991.2 Cab?? Please share your thoughts

Just found out about it and dont see many people discussing it here. It looks like a must have mod, have you had any issues with it?? What are your instal tricks and config settings.

Several threads discussing this. Here is the one with the most comments: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...smart-top.html - if you look up "smart top" in the advance search "title only" box, you will see all the threads.

I have said many times on RL that the SmartTop was the single best modification for my 991.1 GTS cab. It is a total game-changer. I used DIY instructions from RL to install. It can be a little tricky getting it plugged in and programmed but once done, you will be very glad you did it.

Had it before on a Mercedes CLK63 and it was fantastic. Bought it for my C4S but have yet to install it. It is not hard, but a PITA to get to as you remove the covers, then put the roof halfway up, and it makes for some tight working quarters...par for the course with 911s. Might tackle it this week though. The custom program is a bit of a pain if you don’t have a windows computer too, but I think you can adjust settings once installed too, but might be a bit balky. However, once set up, it works great.

Update: Just installed mine. Took about 30-45mins solely because you can’t see the connection very well. My suggestion is to use a small mirror. That helped a lot with getting it lined up. I tried updating the firmware on my Mac but that did not work as intended, nor do I believe there is any new updates since I bought it anyway. Would have made customizing the features easier, but I believe there is another more balky way through the car’s controls. However, all I cared about was the one touch operation anyway.

Here is a good thread and I agree it's a must have for a Cab/Targa - transforms the experience. The auto radio mute on startup is another BIG benefit

Yup, it is a must have. Beyond the obvious feature of remote open and close, it also increases the speed of operation to approx 42 mph which is awesome when it starts raining or the sun pops out on a cloudy day.

FIrst thing I did to my cab'. It is fantastic. So many little benefits, from putting the top down on the way to the car (easy to get in / out) to one touch putting the top up if it starts raining and you're below 30mph, to pulling into the garage, and clicking the top up button, shutting off the car and hopping out while the top goes up by itself. Just really convenient.

The best mod you can do. Only problem is that it's a PITA to get at. Also, I discovered that Porsche has a little lock holding the wire clips together, took more time to figure that out than the whole installation

What can you tell me about the black clips so I don't have to struggle with them?

There is nothing to struggle with. There is a little gray locking lever. Up is locked into place. Down is unlocked. There is a little black release right by the locked out position that must be pushed to allow the lever to move. The best way to familiarize yourself with how it works is by experimenting with the short wiring harness that actually came with the Smart Top module itself before you install it. Play with the lever, press the black release button, and then you’re good to go when releasing the actual connector on the car’s existing top module.

The smart top sort of gets placed in-line between the original connector and convertible top module. Not as hard as it sounds, except for the tight working quarters. Again, a flash light and small mirror will make it so much easier to complete. Just make sure you’ve fully locked the connectors back into place but lifting the levers until they click. Good luck.

You are kidding, right? Didn't we talk about this? If not I apologize but I thought we did. I bought it for my Targa even before I had my car since I read so many good things about it here. I use it every time I use my car in one way or another!

And the install in a Targa takes no more than 10 minutes.

A little trick, put your cell phone camera in selfie mode and you can hold it near the clip with one hand and see what you are doing on the screen while you install the cables with the other. It really is a 30 min install, and the youtube instructions from Smarttop are very good (at least for a cab, not sure how it is on a Targa).

10 minutes max on the Targa. The online instructions were way too long and someone here pointed it out that it is way easier than they said made it out to be, and I can confirm it is.
