Default Found a loose bolt in my engine?!?

2017 991.2, 34K: So I successfully completed my first oil change in the 991 (by myself, dealer has done the others) thanks to videos and informative posts here. I got the fans and air intake out of the way and discovered this loose bolt just lying there. I also saw two threaded holes that may or may not be missing something. Hopefully someone here can confirm. Only Porsche dealers have serviced this vehicle, and I didn't have to remove any bolts to get to this point in the oil change. Actually it's kinda cool how it all comes apart without fasteners. Less cool to find this lying down there...

Also saw a shiny threaded opening near it, but way bigger in diameter. Am I missing a different bolt there?

Wider shot of area in question (I've already removed the extra bolt)

Does something go here? The extra bolt looks like it might fit. I didn't try it was still way too hot down there.

Here's the other shiny threaded opening. We are looking at the far left of the engine compartment.

The extra bolt that was lying on top of the engine.

This was my first time putting eyes on the engine so I don't know what it is supposed to look like. Pretty sure they don't provide extra bolt storage on top though. Thx

That looks like the bolt that holds the rubber trim for the coolant/oil cap plastic trim piece in place. Let me know if you need a photo of what I'm talking about

A bolt is used to hold two things together. the question is what was that bolt binding together. A bolt is not used to just plug up a hole.

I would buy a semi-rigid endoscope on ebay, attach it to your phone and have a look.
This is a a generic bolt used to hold any number of things in place.
There is probably a piece of trim or a shield with a bolt missing.

As for the some of the threaded holes, they are created during the manufacturing process, and are sometimes used as anchor points during assembly.

My other guess - the heat shields that cover the spark plugs is another likely location.

My money is still on that rubber trim piece that holds the plastic trim in place for the coolant and oil caps.

duxsi, I feel like I've seen threaded holes like this on engines before, so I hope you are right. Makes sense.

Koala, if you have a pic without taking apart your car that would be awesome.

I was wrong - it's not the bolt near the oil filler cap. It does look like one of the bolts that hold the heat shields on for the spark plug area. You can view this part of the engine by laying down on the ground and taking a poke around behind the rear tires

There are two shorter bolts that look like the one you found, they go on the heat shield towards the "top" and then there are two more slightly longer bolts with the same head that hold on the bottom heat shield.

In this photo you can only see 1 of each bolt - the other pair are towards the rear of the car (to the right), in this picture

I believe the area in question is where the PDCC Pump mounts. Not sure if you are the original owner? Maybe someone removed the PDCC pump?

Did you have the heat shield recall performed recently?

PDCC Pump
I bought it CPO, but have all of the records. I don’t recall anything about a PDCC pump. Next I’m gonna look up what the heck that is!

A quick search here shows PDCC isn’t available on my base Carrera, it comes with the Carrera S.
