Default Changing side window trim on 991.2

I'm looking at buying a 991.2 that has the bright aluminum side window trim, and would replace with the black side window trim, which I think looks nicer.

Suncoast sells the black side window replacement kit. Just wondering how easy it is to make this swap, has anyone done it? Any special tools required? Able to get it done without too much risk of damaging the paint?

Thanks!

I just got my answer from a Porsche tech:

"It is not an easy job. The rear portion of the trim is part of the rear glass, so both rear windows would need replaced and they bolt in from the inside. The rear interior would need disassembled to complete this. The trim for the front windows is easier, but the seals would need replaced."

Hm. You don't suppose a couple of nails would do, would you?

I would consider wrapping it. I've heard a couple of people doing that on their 997 Targa's that had the shiny trim from the factory. It will be much more cost efficient than replacing the trim, and a good wrap shop should give you outstanding results. Plus, down the road when you go to sell the car, it's still "factory" and the new owner can either decide to keep the wrap on or remove it.

Not an easy swap from what I heard. Keep the aluminum trim, it's a rare option that looks great in person. Depends on the car but I love it on a dark car and since it highlights the window curves and 911 shape well. I'm a huge fan after having it on a dark blue metallic car. If really against it, you could probably wrap it in some vinyl...or probably easy to find a car without it.

One of the cars we were looking at to buy had the shiny trim and the first thing I would have done is have it wrapped.
so I vote for a wrap!

Wrapping is easy.....about a 2 beer job. Need a hair dryer for the corners.

vinyl wrapping window trims are fairly common in BMW communities so it's not hard and durability is pretty good from what I see.

I had a BMW where I wrapped my window trim with matte black and it lasted the entire 4-5 years and it looked great the entire time. Waaay cheaper and easier than replacing it. I think some local person charged me like $200 bucks to do it. I bet you could probably DIY with a heat gun and some patience.

Would the opposite (going from black trim to bright aluminum) work with vinyl wrap? I really like the offset of the brighter surround on a silver or gray car and generally do not care for black trim, black wheels, etc...

this is my 991.2 side mirror trim, the lower portion on the drivers side. Looks like a rock hit it while I was driving on the highway. I heard this "TAC" sound.

SO bummed out!

Can this trim be removed or repaired (filled and painted), or is it a get a brand new side window replacement? This blemish makes me nuts!

^ You might find a good result with a little wax and a cloth before going more aggressive with rubbing compound.

In the worst case, it sounds like you'll have to replace the window to replace that piece of trim—there's a great thread on how to remove the rear windows related eliminating squeaks and rattles.

I know this is an old thread but I thought I'd share my experience for others. I just acquired a 991.2 with the chrome window trim. I was searching how to change it and found this thread, and it inspired me to have it wrapped. Local place charged me $600 but I'm very happy with the finished product. I wish I took better before and afters but below are some pics.

I’d like to do the same but an internet search does not generate a lot of results. Most wraps are chrome to black. Interested to hear from folks who went from black to chrome trim with wrap. Thanks.
