Default 991 Base with 50k miles.. What to look out for?

Morning everyone!

I'm in the market for a 991 base w/ PDK and came across a 2015 this morning that fits in the budget but has 48k miles. I know the 991 is widely regarded as a "bulletproof" car but I'm curious what issues others may have run into at 50k miles and beyond?

My prior PCar was a 981 Cayman S which I bought with 42k miles and enjoyed ~12k trouble free miles the year I owned it however most of my other cars have been lower mile and it always makes me a little nervous to jump into something with more than 40k. Looking forward to feedback!

As a side note - if you're selling a 2012.5 - 2015 991 base with PDK send it my way! Serious buyer.

You'd look for the same items that you looked for when you purchased your 981 with 42k miles. These vehicles are not significantly more fragile than any other car, and since you have experience in purchasing a vehicle at above 40k, not sure what's there to be nervous about. Once you find a vehicle that suits your fancy, it'd be in your interest to get a PPI done from a reputable place, and then enjoy.

I picked up a 2013 C2 in early April. Had just over 50k miles on it. Seller was second owner, 'weekend/trip' car, had all maintenance records during his ownership, which was ~40k of the 50k miles, had it PPI'd, no issues.
Flew to AR, drove it home to TX over 2 days. Zero issues. Feels bulletproof to me. Coming from a 996, it's like a different world. 50k is nothing on these! Buy and drive with confidence!

Low 50's. It's a very well optioned car. I think sticker was closed to $115k.

I would agree that there aren't a lot of standouts for worries with these cars at that mileage. So, the big worries are out of the way and we can move down to the less scary, more annoying stuff.
In your position, I would make sure to consider the following:
  • Making sure that all recalls (if any) have been completed
  • Making sure all appropriate maintenance has been done (20k service? 40k?, last oil change, etc.)
  • How new are the tires/brakes/etc.?
In the grand scheme of things, these are fairly minor. Still, if everything else checks out with the car it's nice to not have to worry about a potentially big service cost coming up in the first few months of ownership. If your only option for service is at a Porsche dealership, you're probably looking at over $1k for any of the aforementioned mileage based services (If I remember right, I did the 20k service/oil change on my 981 at the dealership, and it was roughly $1300). A new set of tires will be anywhere upwards of $1200; Brakes probably start around a few hundred for just pads, but go up dramatically if you start talking about replacing rotors.

Find a good local independent shop if you can. Some of these shops are certified with Porsche and can do all of your routine maintenance and warranty work. You'll save thousands.

Thanks for the valuable input! The specific car I'm looking at did have the 40k service performed at 35k miles about a year ago so I am happy to see that and that's absolutely of value when buying one of these pre-owned.

I picked up a 2014 C2 manual with 30K. Paid low $50's. CPO till Dec 2020. No issues what so ever. Blast to drive.. Prior car was a BMW with 195K miles so miles don't worry me as long as the car was taken care of..

I would check:

Battery - might be ready for replacement

Door cards separation - $3k-$4k fix start dealer

Brakes - $3-$4k fix at dealer

also consider getting a Fidelity warranty just in case of PDK issues.

I just recently joined the PCar crowd 30 days ago with the purchase of a 2014 C2S with 36K miles. Bought from a reputable CA dealer who did the 60K/6 year service, verified the latest recall completion and installed a new set of PZero's and a brake fluid flush. Coming from all BMW's I am pleasantly surprised and driving the car everyday.Did purchase the recommended aftermarket warranty along with wheel and glass extras, just in case. Enjoy the car and don't jet it sit...drive it!

Great point. A lot of the early 991's have door card separation (mine did) so definitely worth checking this. Not a huge deal, but annoying once you see it if you're OCD. Mine were both replaced under CPO warranty and the new ones look perfect.

60k service is a major service point so keep that in mind. This service interval is something that is miles or time based. Not sure when the in service date was on that car but it might be closer to timing out then you think.

I got my 2016 with 61k earlier this year. Been driving it regularly since. No complaints yet. It's pretty straight forward for a modern car.
