Default PDK “Calibration”

Was in for my annual maintenance (and Soul install, another thread) and asked about the PDK service. I know the 10 year/120k mile interval is recommended, but I’m at 5 years and 46k miles at the moment and like to be preventative.

He quoted me a price which includes calibration which is where the PDK “realigns the clutches” and takes about 20 minutes. This was a new one to me as the dealer says they swap the fluid and perform a reset which is a different process.

So, at least one inquiring mind wants to know about this calibration process and if/when it should be done.

Calibration is done via PIWIS and doesn't require any fluid changes. I've done it. Car makes a bunch of clunking/clanking sounds. The purpose is for the sensors to re learn the gap tolerances which have worn ever so slightly during x mile of use.

yes it takes about 10 minutes and I absolutely noticed the shifts were smoother after.

I just sold my 991 C2S today so I am no longer with a PDK car.

Thanks for the response! From what I just read it makes sense. My Indy has a “PIWIS” equivalent and it has the calibration and reset features. So in September when I bring it in for brakes, PDDC fluid, and PDK Service, I’ll have him do the calibration as well.

I had the fluid changed on mine and the calibration done. It shifts more like new, and since I'm OCD, I had the fluid done at the same time for peace of mind. I always believe the factory intervals are waaay too long for fluid changes.

My dealer wanted $180 for this service. I’ll probably pay it but talk about highway robbery. I didn’t realize it took all of ten minutes.

180$ to recalibrate the PDK? what a steal. I am sure recalibrating the PDK should be in the working instructions after you replace the transmission fluid - just another excuse from the dealer to charge the customer easy money with little effort.

Yep. $180. I have the car tuned and have started to get some unusual shift activity while in auto mode so thought it would be best to do the recalibration to see if it helped. If not, I’ll pick up the Cobb PDK tune.

I think you are able to do this on your own if you have a COBB Accessport.....

Is this calibration recommend/required every time you do the pdk service ? I don’t recall my Indy mentioning that. If there are benefits I’ll definitely confirm that he’s doing it.

Also, Btw my Indy says do the fluid every 40k miles. Over the years they have lowered the interval. He also said the first time you replace the filter along with the fluid then after that it’s just fluid changes.

my new to me GTS came from an owner that had PIWIS and I am convinced he did this calibration because the GTS shifts smoother (even in Sport Plus and WOT) than my 991.1S I previous had. The 991.1S also clunked and jerked when down shifting to all 3 lower gears, this GTS is like butter smooth.
I even took my previous car to the dealer complaining about PDK being too jerky, and they never recommended PDL calibration.
