Morning Dgags, the short answer is "yes" because the 5W50 stays in spec longer, and does not exhibit the thermal shearing of the 0W40. As you already know, the 5W50 is completely fine down to -13F. so you can use it year-round. Please ask if you have additional questions or concerns.

The thinner 0w-40 spec is how they game the EPA mpg numbers. All the OEMs do it. But if you live somewhere that is on the warmer side, higher viscosity should be better for engine protection. The other way Porsche games the mpg numbers is running higher oil temps in normal mode compared to sport.

I hate these discussions as I know the 5w50 is better for my ‘19 T but, the two dealers in Atlanta will not use it. 5w50 was listed as approved in my ‘14 C2 owner’s manual but is not in my ‘19 manual. Will stick with 0W40 until after warranty expires. Do not want to fight a warranty claim if any issues during that time. Frustrating! And I live in the Atlanta area. 5w50 the better option.....

please post a UOA of the Motul. I just put in a LiquiMoly and have noticed valve lifter ticking. I might drain it and throw in M1 5w50.

this is the mobil 5w50 Product Data Sheet showing pour point of -42C. This is -43.6F. We all should be good with this oil.

Any options for a better dealer? You're not far from PEC in Atlanta. I'm curious what oil they use You can also just always run your car in sport mode to keep the oil temps down which keeps the viscosity higher. I recall normal mode keeps the oil temps around 230F and sport is around 190F. Warmer oil, lower viscosity, better mpg. So just a method for Porsche to bump up their mpg numbers and reduce their CO2 numbers. Lower viscosity is also lower protection if there are high bearing loads. If you tend to beat on the car, which I think it should be, just leave it in sport mode. If just driving easy and never getting into the throttle hard and not taking the revs up, it can be left in normal.

This link has good info on oil film thickness as related to oil viscosity and temperature. The higher the film thickness, the better for handling high loads in a hydrodynamic journal bearing.

Both dealers refused to use 5w50. My dealer used the 5w50 I bought when I took my ‘14 C2 in for service. Refused to with my ‘19 T. I printed the above info from Porsche and will share with my SA.

+1 for 5w-50. Quieted my 2017 GTS beautifully and I change my oil myself. Not hard at all. I always have used Porsche spec'd oil. They can't claim warranty invalidation if you're using a Porsche approved oil as indicated in the above posts.
