that float will rest at min to mean anything between min and empty correct? once it drops enough, assume some coolant warning will come up also. Seems we should not rest on min and always get to mid point.
Yes, I agree, as I mentioned a few posts above yours, my float was at "min" but I added one litre before before the float even moved.
Never occurred to me that I should check this as I’ve been dumbed down to wait for a warning light to appear. Now, for the first time in 8 months of ownership I checked and it appears (and someone please correct me if I’m wrong) that I am at the “minimum” mark. So does prevailing wisdom say minimum is ok? Should I wait for it to drop below minimum? (That doesn’t seem right). Do I add a little to get it halfway to MAX? (This way, if it’s losing fluid, I can see it before it drops below the MIN mark). How much fluid should one expect to add to bring it halfway from MIN to MAX?
I feel somewhat irresponsible that I’ve waited this long to check this.
I’m updating my comment above with an update as I feel this is quite in line with the OP. After adding about 400 ml of coolant, I was able to get the ball thingy to hover right around the middle as seen below. It was interesting that it didn’t move at all for around the first ~150 ml of added coolant. It wasn’t until I was over around 200 ml of added coolant that I began to notice it move. By 400 ml, it was nearly dead center.
And because I now have gotten into the habit of creating DIY videos for even the simplest & mundane 991 things, I documented this experience here:
Total water volume is roughly 28 liters in this car so adding 0.5 or 1 liter is not a big deal.
I wonder if you top it up, if the car burps out the excess when it gets hot....
Just added 0.5L to top mine off. Last did this a year ago when I added the same amount.
I guess as long as I can see the fluid level when its at min, its not much to worry about.
I think it is the same as with the 991.1 -- the float indicator can fool you if it is touching either side of the neck.
When the ball is on MAX, the system could be just barely full, or it could be overfilled, in which case you can expect to get a puddle on the ground, usually when you park the car after a spirited drive. Excess coolant comes out underneath the filler cap where you can't see it, drains down the neck, and then runs down onto the exhaust system, etc., before it hits the floor.
The best approach is to keep the ball somewhere between MIN and MAX when the engine is cold.

I must be one of the few that actually checks their Owner's Manuals...sort of like when I always checked the Aircraft Operating Handbook.
On page 253 of my 2015 991.1 Owner's Manual, it states "when the engine is cold and the vehicle is level, the red display (ball) must be within the area of the arrow between the min and max markings".
I just fixed a coolant leak in my 991 and my RED ball is in the middle between Min and Max markers.
i kept adding 2 cups coolant every week, looked under motor and a little pink but no puddles...took to dealer right before warranty expired...new pump/valve block..been fine since for 5K miles..i check it every week
