This has been a topic for discussion before. Operating temps can vary based on a number of factors. Most visible is running different modes.

Running Sport mode keeps the water temps at the mid 190’s F, my default mode. This keeps the variable vanes in the front of the radiators open at all times. Individual mode opens and closes them, the temps then go over 200+, this is normal.

The thermostat is also controlled and affects temps.

I like the Sport mode for a variety of reasons, lower temps is one of them.

Took the car out for a drive and confirmed what all of you have been saying. The coolant temp gauge doesn't display accurate coolant/water temp.

After a 10 minute highway drive, coolant temp was 199.4 deg while car still showed 194.

Also, after

The torque app says that the water temp in normal mode is around 220 degrees when the car is fully warmed up on my 991.2. No problem at all, of course, and it drops to around 185 in sport mode. The oil temp reading ont he dahs is much more accurate.

I agree with the OP that this dumbing down of the water temp gauge is appalling in a precise machine like the 911. Ferry Porsche and his team would never have pulled such a bonehead move.

Literally the very last thing you'd expect from German engineers: gauges that deliberately lie to you.

I went out yesterday to see:
39 F out.
After 6 miles, 13 minutes, water was 194 and oil 196.
Sport mode.

Yeah, I dunno, tough call there. At least the Dieselgate hack was somewhat clever. They'd have gotten away with it, if it hadn't been for those meddling college kids.

There's nothing clever about a gauge that always reads 194F except when the engine is either stone cold or undergoing prompt criticality.

What does the 992 report as coolant temps? Anyone know.

resurrecting this thread

My new to me 991.1 GTS reported 228-234 oil temps throughout most if the 7.5 hour journey from PA to NC, even when I was cruising at 80-85 for over an hour, the temps stayed that high.. got stuck in 4 different slow downs and accidents, I was under the impression that X51 kitted motors with their 3rd radiator would run same or cooler as the 991.1S motors.. yet I don't remember hitting constant 228-232 on highway on my 991.1S

991.1 GTS guys, can you share your highway cruising oil temps on long trips?

991.2 at least likes to keep the oil temps between 231 to 237F for better gas mileage and emission control in normal mode before
adding the front water fans.
If you switch to sport mode it will flick the fans on and drop the oil temp 10-15F or more.
