FWIW lugging the engine in 7th while clutch is engaged isn't straining the clutch so much as 7th gear itself.

Omg thats not lugging. Its totally fine to use 7th. A turbo 3.0 isnt being lugged unless its under about 1200rpm and even then, briefly

I believe that 7th gear was added for fuel economy, not for performance. The car achieves top speed in 6th gear, not 7th. I don’t see any issue in leaving the car in 7th gear to accelerate on the highway, other than boredom.

They pull pretty hard in 7th. Not sure how that could be an issue. As stated, they're above 2k RPM at speed. Maybe you need to shift if driving up Loveland pass.

Default this sounds like

A situation where you have bone headed left lane squatters on their autopilot and need instant acceleration to blow by a line in the right lane from 80 to 100. Downshift always as the faster you are going the cleaner the pass (ie everyone has more room).

So I have this idea that one should not use 7th gear to pick up speed. I’f I’m doing 80 in the highway and space opens up I go to 6th, bring speed up to 100 and back to seventh.

My brother says it is very anoying and as long as I’m not flooring it one can bring the car up in speed using 7th without straining the clutch.

So, thoughts?

I don't think at highway speeds it's a problem for the engine... however, it's not really the best way to do it.
