Is the garage door opener directional? I back into my garage. When I drive out and attempt to close the garage door, there is no response. I have to turn the car around, somewhat, and then the garage door can be closed. Seems very odd to me. I can open the garage door from my home, about 80 feet away with the handheld opener so I know it's not the receiver. Does anyone else have this issue? If so, I'll have the Porsche dealer look into this on the next visit.
The homelink transmitter is under the front bumper cover. I doubt you’re hand-held remote would work, either, if pointed opposite of the receiver at bumper level with the 991 in between.

I'm not sure what's happening to the OP but I can confirm that my car will open the garage door even when the front of the car is pointing away from the garage door. Mind you, this is outside so the transmitter under the front bumper is pointing away from the receiver that's on the garage door opener motor inside the garage. I could not figure out from the OP if the car is inside or outside the garage with the front bumper pointing away from the motor but either way, there shouldn't be a problem.

I just re-read your post. My car can open and close the garage door with the transmitter in the front bumper pointing away from the door. I'm not sure why yours doesn't.

Surprising, but good to know. I stand corrected. Thanks.
I have the same issue, I can open the garage door from 100ft down the street approaching the door, but it is flaky closing when I am driving out from feet away, handheld works. Also back into my garage. More of an minor annoyance than an issue,

I had a hand held remote that would not work unless I was 50 feet down the driveway. Too much electrical interference around the house. A modern world problem.
LED lighting also causes issues with the signal. So, reduce if possible, in & around your garage.
LexVan is right. My homelink button would open the door from down the street, but it wouldn’t close it when I left. I swapped out the LED bulbs in the door opener for incandescent and the homelink now works perfectly no matter where I am or what direction the car is pointing.
The transmitter on the front of the car is omnidirectional. The car may block/degrade some of the signal, but not all of it. That is why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I'm with Lex. Multiple punches may be in order to synch up...
The problem is most likely on your receiving end at the opener. Is your antenna extended vertically toward the floor? Or is it folded up in the housing with a little twisty? Extend it out and put a little knot on the end.
I always had great 18Es and other commo gurus on my teams...
