Chronic issues with Cab roofs?
This will be my first cab vehicle so Im wondering if there are many problems with the roof mechanism. My buddy had a M6 and there was a sensor issue that would go out even after replacement and it would make the car pretty much useless until the dealer replaced it. I know P car reliability is far better but still gathering info

I think the mechanism will be fine for a long time, however the fabric of the roof, from examples I've seen, looks cosmetically pretty bad after a few years with a lot of creases everywhere. I saw one the other day and to be honest I find it unacceptable for a car this price to have a roof look this bad.

I've had no issues at all with the cab roof in my 2014 991. It performs flawlessly. It definitely shows some creases after a few years, but nothing too crazy.

I agree with Dennis C. Very reliable mechanically and I have never heard of a problem fo others. Cosmetically yes there are some creases on the sides where it folds but not all over the place and they have not significantly worsened since I bought the car 3 years ago. Car is 6+ years old and the top won't need to be replaced any time in the foreseeable future. Also to note: there are no creases visible on a warm sunny day!

I looked into this before my first cab purchase (in Boxster form) and recommendations of Rennlisters for keeping the top in good shape are: always store with top up, plan on treating with Ragg Topp or similar product once a year, never store top down when wet, brush of dirt etc with horse hair brush or lint roller. Aside from minor creasing these steps should keep it looking good for 5-10 years, assuming you keep it mostly garaged parked. And if worse comes to worse, replacement is $5-7G, not peanuts but not the end of the world.

my '14 has the material scuffed up I had posted about it here in the past.
For such a high priced car the top material should look better and hold up longer.

I have owned 911 Cabs since the late 1980s. Longest I've owned one is 8 years and that was a 996 that came with a hardtop which means the top was down several months every winter when the hardtop was on. 991 wise I've had 2 991.1s and now have a 991.2. No problems for me but agree with above, taking care of them is key.
The only "issue" I've ever had was on the 996 which developed a large spot, looked like a grease spot, on one side. It was replaced under warranty; I went with a black replacement (original was grey) so the spot was not as noticeable.

My top looks great.
RaggTopp every 2 years.
Never washed with soaps.
Sticky tape roller every week or 2.
I never operate the top, while the car is moving, even though you can. Wuts the rush?
