If you do blow the rear and then do the double swap, does the rear fit in the frunk?

Hey Duke! Have a great trip. I was up in Glacier back in 1997. Spent a few days there with an outfitter rafting the river and camping, and then went all the way up to Baniff for a bike trip with Backroads.

Just a few random thoughts:

1) Good job on the tire plug kit. You do know how to use it right? Our tires are NOT easy to plug. Practice on something before you depart if needed.
2) Do you have an emergency take-off spare tire at home (you should alway keep one of each)? If you do, make sure someone back home knows where they are, and have a FedX shipping bill ready & waiting.
3) Call your contact at Tire Rack, and make sure they have your tires in stock. Store TR contact info in your phone.

Have fun. Be safe.Post pics.

No, I don't believe either the front or rear full size wheel/tires will fit in the frunk. They would need to go in the back seat area, which will fit both the front and rear. You need to keep a plastic bag or wheel tote in case you need to throw a dirty wheel in the rear.

I have seen other threads where a .1 owner drove 200mi on the wheel/tire I have, another ran a test fitting including a drive. All of the pics I've seen of those who've gotten the spare show a 17 on the tire. I cannot tell from Ceepe's pic, but he says it's a 19" tire.

Thanks LV. I look forward to the trip.

I do not have a take off, but that's a good idea. Without wheel damage I can get a tire o/n'ed I'm sure. Plug will work in most cases, I just don't want to be stuck hitching rides 'cause I don't have phone coverage. I've read too many Stephen King novels and I'm very good looking so I don't want that kind of trouble either.

Here is the tire size. Can't see how a 17inch space saver would work on a car with 20's...unless that 17 inflates to a tire with more sidewall? Maybe that's possible? Edit, does not seem possible that a 185/60/17 would equal out.

Well, if you run into a bind, let me know, and I'll FedX you one of my back-up emergency spares. And I always keep a pair of running shoes with me in case the cell coverage is bad, I figure I'm good for about 10 miles. Maybe I should learn to climb trees instead??

Right up until the time you need one. I was on a group drive in the middle of nowhere and that silly can of fix a flat got a driver to a repair shop.

Buy a fresh bottle of Slime and throw it in the frunk. Silly is good.

I'm not saying do not use it in an emergency and it has its place but will only have a very limited application. A larger puncture, tear or the sidewall damaged and the FaF would be rendered useless. The practical side of me just would rather have a spare tire if out on a long distance trip. I plan on touring the Smokies next summer and would prefer something guaranteed to get me to somewhere for a proper fix, though I suppose a flatbed would work also.

I have sets of wheels mounted with both summer and winter tires. I am considering simply carrying one of the seasonally unused front wheels, with its mounted tire, in the back seat area on extended trips. This will keep the frunk free and avoid the expense of purchasing a dedicated spare. Since a damaged tire would have to go in the back seat area anyway, there will be no loss in luggage carrying capability.

That's probably the best bet, in that you avoid a double change circumstance for a rear tire puncture, and can drive longer on the spare. My only concern is properly securing the wheel. Especially being behind your head/body.

I do that with our E400 wagon, and rigged up a bracket to store one full-size wheel and tire against the side of the cargo area. (It has a tie-down strap under the cover.)

I guess it comes down to personal assessment of risk and inconvenience. How many miles or hours away from tire service or rescue are you willing to go?

Confirmed figment for my car with multiple dealers and users -- one RL'er who drove 200mi on the spare. Supposedly, inflated diameter results in rolling circumference that matches the tires on the 20in wheel.

Now i I just need to get the rest of my touring package ready for Saturday!

Thanks again for your usual and reliable help/input. Duke.

The spares rolling diameter doesnt need to match the other tire on the front, it will work just fine

i am the person who used the 17 inch version for 200 miles to get home on my 2018 gts
