CarPlay Ugh!
Might be worth a shot to look at:
A more exposed phone mount, possibly a Keenu Airframe (vent mount) or a t-design universal phone mount. Might help it run cooler.
Closing any unneeded apps. Should free up iPhone memory.
Rebooting your phone once a week. Will help keep the OS more or less clean.
Make sure you have the latest iOS, but also the latest Apps used by CarPlay. Waze, Maps, etc.
Longshot but if your phone is older you might want one with more memory if you have the option next time.
One last thing is how old is the battery in your car? I’ve had weird electrical things happen on various of my German cars over the years, especially it seems to me when the car battery is on its way out.
From what you’ve said it may be a combination of things.
My own ‘17 C2 CarPlay doesn’t work absolutely perfectly all the time either, I have to say. Hope it works out for you.

I'm going to chime in to say that I think the PCM is a bit wonky when it comes to CarPlay integration..
Weird behaviors:
1. Carplay doesnt connect - (remove cable re-attach cable and wait for it to pair - sometimes requires unlocking the lock screen on the phone - which it shouldnt require)
2. Low volume - sometimes when connected with carplay, the car's volume **** is disabled and all sources are played very low (including normal terrestrial radio if I go back to that) problem resolves when I remove the cable and turn off the PCM and turn it back on.
3. Car pairs with iphone, carplay controls are displayed on screen, but audio plays through phone. (Sometimes getting audio through the car is about 30 sec to a minute later than seeing the carplay controls on the PCM - you just have to wait it out.) - this also can happen if you leave your phone connected, while you run an errand and instead of waiting for it to eventually auto-resume when you restart the car, you hit 'play' before it's ready.
4. I decide to listen to something on a FM station and hit the tuner button - it goes to the tuner for 5 seconds and then automatically goes back to carplay for no reason.
Don't get me wrong - for the most part it's totally functional, but just has some glitches that I've learned to work through - I know not to hit play on an audio source until it is fully paired. Also love using Waze - and for a chuckle, I've turned the Waze voice prompts to the cookie monster voice which is pretty funny: "Police reported ahead - you think they want cookie?"
I'm about to invalidate all my complaints above - but on the ios13 beta, the ability to unlock your phone at a light and look at something other than what's active on Carplay without changing the carplay screen is great, as are some of the different 3 panel displays in carplay. (Note that the behavior I listed above occurred both before and after installing ios13 beta)
