Default NYC right turn on a red light = 3 points?!

Got a ticket for a right turn at a red light in NYC. Totally forgot that you can't do that in NY.

Go to pay the ticket and find it's a 3 pointer - which seems kinda steep. Further googling and I read that in Manhattan you can't do any kind of plea deal.

Any locals confirm that I need to just pay up and shut up, which is what I am assuming?

My guess you fell on this violation
Failed to obey a traffic signal, a stop sign, or a yield sign3

must have been a no turn on red light lane.

Disobeying traffic control signal, STOP sign or YIELD sign3

Must have been a no turn on red sign somewhere?

Probably easier to pay than to fight. If you fight, you will have to get a lawyer. If you try to do yourself, you will probably lose, but guess it doesn't hurt to try. Turning on red is pretty cut and dry though - and besides, the city wants your money.

you can hire a lawyer for 600 and fight it. He/she can probably get the ticket lowered to just paying finds without points. Points to me is more important due to insurance.

In NYC it is law that you cannot turn right on red, as default . You may only turn right on red if there is a sign stating that you may.

Unique New York.

If you have the time, go to court. 300 cases on the list. Why wouldn't they want to settle? Pay a fine and get rid of points.

There's no right on red in NJ too in some places, and its points.

I'd ask a lawyer. I can't speak for NJ/NY but here in CA, there are some reputable lawyers who are experts in getting traffic tickets dismissed. I appreciate law enforcement officers in general but I'm slowly losing respect for our local cops in the recent months. The motto, "protect and serve" is a joke around in my neck of the woods because they are too focused in generating revenue by handing out silly tickets and getting free doughnuts. No joke.

A law should be passed saying that law enforcement can't be used to provide revenue and basically act as backdoor taxation. What a scary thought: law enforcement looking to bust people so that they can give themselves raises and hire more people!

Perhaps all monies paid in fines and penalties have to be given to charity?

The Supreme Court ruled that the police did not have a constitutional duty to protect a person from harm - back in 2005 plus this was reaffirmed again most recently during the school shooting

I laugh when I hear LEO's say there isn't a quota... LMAO. When younger, I used to get pulled over a lot usually before the end of the month or a couple of days before the month ended.

Show up to court and hope the officer doesn't show up. If he does, ask him if he minds amending the vehicle code violation to an equivalent municipal code(find one that's close that doesn't carry a point). Most officers dont care and neither does the judge if the money is the same. If he doesn't want to amend, some judges will ask in advance if anyone would like to plead no contest and get traffic school. Raise your hand. 99.9% of all lawyers follow these steps....save yourself the money.

There are other things you can do like request a trial by written declaration, subpoena traffic engineering surveys and more time consuming avenues but this is the easiest.
