It is to minimize the road debris affect.

My C4S had the same sort of thing on the painted side skirts, mostly closer to the rear wheels where they flare out a little bit. I never understood why, and it didn't really bug me, but if you get an answer from the horse's mouth, please share.

Same here. I have one small spot on the bottom edge that the Xpel won't lay completely flat.

Mine are the very bottom near the wheel wells. The rest of the skirt is pretty good.

It's a rubber like coating that is sprayed on before the final color coat. It's there to protect that area from stone chips and minor damage. Almost every manufacturer uses it in that area.

The paintwork on the car seems generally good, but this lower section has a rough texture to it, and the very bottom seems really rough. I only noticed it because I was up close to it while washing. Is this normal?

"Smooth" = normal
"Bumpy" = normal
"WTF" = If that's all there is, I wouldn't worry about it.

I was washing my car today, noticed this at the rear of the skirt on one side. I freaked out a bit until I realised it went down the whole side of the car, on both sides but I was wondering what was going on.

Thanks for this thread, I don’t have to worry about it now!

It is normal and based on location it is that way to resist stone chips and road debris.

Looks like protective film to protect the panels from road debris. For the 992, Porsche offers protective film from the factory for the front as well.

I read this is a 3M product (3M 08879) used by Porsche a while back.

On early 911s, people call this "schmutz" or "shutz". A textured soft layer under the paint for impact protection.

Unless you have wet sanded the car (or had someone do it) there is orange peel on your car. You may choose to say there isn't because you have less than some other car(s) you've had or seen or you don't really know how to identify it but it's there. Look harder at the right angles on the right panels and you'll find it. All modern factory robot painted cars that were not hand sanded during the process or wet sanded for perfection afterward have orange peel. All.
