991.1 turbo vs 991.2S
hi all,
So its been a year, and im getting kind of tired of my 997 4s, i need more power. So im putting my 88 carrera for sale, to fund an upgrade to a 991.
So naturally 991 turbo is on top of my list, but recently ive read some interesting things about the 991.2... you can easily chip them to 500bhp and interior is cooler (especially the steering wheel).
Anyone have any feed back on how those two cars would compare? It seems that by the books, 991T does 0-60 in 3.2ish and 991.2 is over 4 seconds... that is a bus lenght (so to speak). Would chipping it make things more comparable? what about long term values? Would “turbo” hold value better, even as a gen 1? Prices seem to be about the same right now.
I see pluses on 991.2 - midlife refresh on looks, amaaaaazing steering wheel (really makes me want to get one), good fuel economy, possible to find a manual.
991 turbo - it is fast. Might hold value better in long term(?)
thanks!

Sadly, that’s all I can add at the moment.
Good luck in the decision.

The Turbo has AWD which you can use in sub par weather conditions a little better. It will hold value a little better. You can swap the 991.2 steering wheel in the older cars too.
If you can only do 60-80mph bursts then the S might be the better car for you.

Not happy with awd on my 997.1 4s. I find it more annoying than anything, plus the added weight. That is not to say ill walk away from a 4s/turbo because of it, but to me, id rather have a rwd car.

You need to drive them.
FWIW - I really liked the way the power came on in my 991.2S. But it didn't feel incredibly fast. It was just really usable. But honestly no ICE seems fast when your DD is an electric so I may be a bad judge.

I have had both 996 TT and 997 TT and 991.1 4S. I'm now in a 991.1 TTS. It is an unbelievable car in many ways. Great Cruiser when just going out and about with the wife. Killer off the line and stable and flat in the curves (with PDCC). A rocket on blast off when needed. AWD not interfering at all for me.

I agree with ^ this guy. Except I've not stepped up to the 991...But love my 997.2TTS.

I'd do a 991.2 and tune it. Lighter package, RWD, more nimble. The 991.2 is a nice improvement over the 991.1. The PCM in the 991.1 is looking really really old now, and the 991.2 PCM is a welcome upgrade. The suspension is better on the 991.2s, as is the steering, and the transmission programming in auto mode.

If you are even thinking about a manual forget the "T"urbo since you cannot get one with it and get a 991.2 "t"urbo and get it tuned. If I could not get a manual I would not be on this forum typing this reply.

OP: In your shoes, i would do exactly what i did. Find a 991.2 C2S with at least all the options you want, (unless you are going to drive it in Winter in the Snowbelt or in the wet Northwest, in which case I'd buy a 991.2 C4S). Then I'd add the X51 PowerKit for cheap, for full GTS power with full factory warranty at a lower cost than a GTS. My X51 cost me around $4k net, after selling my S takeoff turbos. Just saw the X51 PowerKit on sale for ~$6000, but dealer installation cost seems to have moved lower to ~$1000 recently for a buddy here in FL.
At anything less than felony speeds in the USA, an X51 PowerKit S or a GTS is very close in acceleration to the Turbo and the 991 GT3s. Next, some exhaust mods. Ive already done the downpipes and the sound is incredible with PSE turned on. Then in a few years as my warranty is expiring, I'm adding a stage 1 tune to get to around 550 Hp and 500 ft-lbs torque. Unless i read about many drivetrain failures here on Rennlist, which has not been the case so far. Otherwise, that's what i am doing...

Quick question- any reason why you can't put the X51 on a C2 and only the C2S / 4S cars? Is it physically impossible or that Porsche dealers just won't install it on a non S class car?

A couple of things to consider:
- You can add a 991.2 steering wheel to a 991.1. Many people have done this.
- If you're interested in tuning your vehicle, you can tune a 991.1 Turbo to well over 600 HP.
You're probably right about the Turbo or Turbo S holding value a bit more than the 991.2 S. One thing I'd consider is a Turbo S. They have rear wheel steering and PDCC, which really make a difference in handling.
