Default Rear Wiper Poll

To get the rear wiper option with defroster or skip it?

I heard the defroster is useful and wiper people hate for looks.

Not sure about other models if you still get a defroster without the wiper but on the T you cannot get it.

Only Kiwis (e.g. Nick Murray) get rear wipers on their Porsches.

I've never had rear wiper on any car I've owned. Never felt the need in either rain or snow. On the other hand, a defroster is very useful when the inside fogs up or there's ice on the outside.

Yeah - I am thinking may be skip on the lightweight glass and get regular glass with defroster and no wiper on the Carrera T

As I do find defroster very useful on certain nights and weather conditions

But also concerned that light weight glass is a cool option

funny thing is that the defroster button will always be there regardless of the options selected.

I ordered the rear wiper for two reasons ... The first was for its functional benefit living in the Pacific Northwest, the second for historical value. I discovered through some research that Porsche was responsible for making the rear wiper a commonly available option in the automotive industry.

I had the rear wiper removed on my old 993 whip.

Interesting. I've had rear wipers on sports hatches (Supra, 300Z), wagon, hatches, and SUV's. On every one, they were very useful, and you could see a huge difference on the rear glass in the area wiped vs. not. I think with some designs they aren't as necessary but with any kind of vertical rear glass, they are a must. Personally I love the look and find it very retro on a 911.

I've never tried and I've always been curious. Is it good? Better than conventional rain repellents (Rain-X, Griot's, etc)?

I ordered my last 911 (991.1) with the rear wiper. All of my friends made fun of me.

I think it adds to the look of the car, and if you want to drive in the rain and let's say you're parked somewhere and want to back up, that's the only way you're going to see where you're going (my car was made before the put in cameras). As it turns out, as a toy/occasional car, I never had occasion to use the wiper, and I wouldn't order it again. If it was a DD, then definitely.

I'm a bit confused about the OP though, if the car is already ordered, why are you second-guessing yourself?

If I'm shopping for a 911, all other things being equal, I'm buying the car *without* the rear wiper every single time.

Visually...I don't mind and even like the rear wiper on some 911s (think 964 and 993). Others, not so much.

Agree with the functional argument—but the 991.2 backup camera removes a lot of that argument in the rare cases it matters here in CA, and once you're up to any speed at all, the rear window is cleared by the wind.
