Default 2012.5 991.1 Can I swap the head unit for a backup cam?

I have been reading through the threads, and it doesn't look like anyone has swapped the head unit in a 2012.5 991 to get backup cam compatibility. Is this possible? If so, lots of them are available on ebay, what part or manufacture date, or connectors am I looking for?

Edit, oh you mean the head upgrade. I have looked into it, but rather than be without the head for however long it takes, I thought about swapping out.

I was under the impression that the 2012.5 cannot have a backup camera because the hardware isn't present for the input. I would assume that means that this kit wouldn't work, but I have sent them an email.

Here's the response I received:

"The kit is compatible with all PCM3.1s from system version 2.10 thru 4.76; which is all of them.

The CarPlay kit itself supports the back-up camera add-on. There wouldn't be any issues with your PCM and the CarPlay backup camera; you'll have system version 3.xx. (The issues you are referring to with backup camera are when trying to add an aftermarket camera connected directly to the PCM with system version 3.xx; it's not compatible in that case. )

The CarPlay add-on camera's we sell are 35GBP (47USD) and replace one of the number plate lights, they are pretty seamless. I've attached a couple of photos of the camera and the display you see when reverse is selected.

Any queries please just let us know.
Kind regards
Nick

Wasn't reading carefully that you have a 2012.5.
Looks like a great solution, thanks!

So, Do you have to choose between having Android Auto or CarPlay? or Can you buy one hardware that works with both?

So this auto switches in and out when you go to rear like a normal backup camera or do you have to press a button?

Just finished phase 1 of my install. The CarPlay portion is working and wasn't that difficult to install - if you've replaced an iPhone screen, you're probably capable of DIYiing this. The hardest part was fitting the CarPlay module and the extra wiring back into the console. I'll be working on the backup camera next and will update.
