Default Here's what winter driving can do.....

Turbocharger out of my Isuzu Diesel Truck with just 31K miles on it. $ 3,300 to replace. The winter chemicals used on the roads in the Washington DC region did this to the unit. It's exposed like the turbos on the 991.2 are. Just a data point when you are considering running your Porsche on salted winter roads, there can be a cost in corrosion and deterioration. Myself I used older SUV's in the winter and leave my 911 in the garage until the crud is off the roads.

Thanks for sharing. Where/how are they exposed on the 991.2? Wonder if they they’re easy to hose off?

Another reason I live in FL. Between the weather and the taxes I'll stay down here.

But at the same time....aren't our 911 cars designed for all weather. Porsche Turbo models are used in Porsche winter driving schools etc...German snow, Swiss snow etc.

Agree about the chemicals and salt on the road

PS - I am in the area as well

Have the internals been damaged or is this just the case that is badly corroded?

...the car is suppose to be used and enjoyed. If you lock it up you would be missing out on winter fun.

...enjoy your life with the car both are short

31k miles doesn't mean much without age of the vehicle. Is this a 15 year old car or a 4 year old car?

This component is very badly corroded and clearly was not treated for any protection. I doubt the Porsche 991.2 turbos are nearly as vulnerable.

Whenever possible, encourage state and local highway departments to give up salt in favor of urea-based and other less destructive melt compounds. Idiots who claim salt is cheaper never factor in the expense of replacing infrastructure, let alone vehicle damage.

It's an Isuzu NPR Commercial Truck, you pass a hundred of them a day in every city, the # 1 selling midsize commercial unit. This particular unit is a 2012. You can see the location of the tubo in on the second photo at the end of the orange hose. Porsche 991.2 turbos are even more exposed than this - photo attached. The whole point of this was merely to show you guys the damage that can be caused by the salt / brine / road pre-treatments in certain urban areas where the pressure to keep the roads clear from the public is more important than the damage caused to metal components, and it doesn't matter is that's German or Japanese steel. This same truck also had a new fuel tank a year ago due to corrosion (its metal). There is always a few threads on "Should I drive my 911 in the winter time?" This is merely one data point to show you the corrosion that occurs when vehicles are put on salted roads. You decide what works for you, it's your cars, your money. FYI, my trucks in my business never make it beyond ten years due to the salt in the Wash DC / Baltimore region. For that reason my Porsche doesn't go out in the winter except on clear roads. YMMV.

I’m with you. This just might help someone who plans on keeping long term. But then again I wouldn’t mind if everyone else just beats on there cars in every way possible.

I think life's too short to not drive your favorite car in winter.

The crushed dirt/gravel Caltrans dumps on the snowed up roads here in Norcal may not rot your car but it wreaks havoc on the paint! This is how I roll in dirt, snow or in heaven forbid, SHTF / get out of Dodge situations. The GTS doesn't leave the garage unless the sun is shining.
