Default 991.2 11/2017 starts leaking at 14.000 miles

Hi Guys,

recently I bought a used 911.2 Carrera year 11/2017 with 13.500 miles and a few options (sport exhaust, etc.) and with extended warranty from a local dealership. Suddenly,500 miles later, the car started leaking. I had a quick look and found water leaking from the water pump host. (See pictures below) First I thought screws came loose and started tightening the three of them next to the leaking area. They seemed to be quite tight already? Do you have any suggestions? I made a few pictures. Thanks for your feedback.

Cheers, Michael

Cannot quite tell where your leak is coming from as you need to take photo from further back so we can better orient as to where the fluid is coming from*. It may be just overflow from the coolant tank. However, your car's build date is right during the period for the faulty water pumps and the pinkish residue is a sure giveaway that it's coolant (antifreeze). Take it back to the dealer and, if it's the water pump, they'll fix it under warranty.

* See photos in posts 37 & 48 above.

It seems to be that the 991.2 and later generations are more prone to this issue compared to 991.1 generation

I am considering trading in my 991.1 turbo S for a 992 Turbo S that was just released but this is giving me some hesitation

My 2020 Cayenne Turbo also seems to have some build quality issues! Are we facing a crisis here where Porsche is cutting corners but keep increasing the prices?

Our early-build 2017 Carrera had the same problem: water pump seal failure (at 19,400 miles). As my service advisor said, "...the problem is not common, but neither is it rare," or words to that effect. Take it back to the dealer for a warranty fix. FYI, when I picked ours up (they kept the car almost a week) the service guy mentioned that the concerned part(s) were on their 2nd or 3rd update. Otherwise, gorgeous photo, Technikoch! Welcome to Rennlist.

Default 2019 991.2 4S water pump failure replaced at 3,000 miles and leaking again at 7,000.

Hi Forum, new member and first time Porsche owner. I bought a 2019 Agate Grey 991.2 Carrera 4S, Sport Chrono, PDK, etc. Took new delivery April 2019, babied it throughout break-in after that, just spirited weekend drives. I smelled that sweet coolant smell during a drive (around 3k miles on the clock in Oct 2019), pulled over and saw the pink fluid dripping from above the pulley. No warnings or temp indications or fluctuations. Proceeded driving straight to the dealer a couple miles away.

Diagnosis was water pump seal failure. Pump and seal replaced Oct 2019. Car ran fine no issues until this week. Coolant smell pulling into garage today and saw the below. Will bring it to the dealer Monday and call PCNA Probably another seal/pump faiure. I'm shocked this is happening again especially on a car with this price point ($150k

Oct 2019 - 1st occurrence

May 1, 2020 new occurrence

May 1st 2020

I never needed to top up my Toyota, Honda or Acura. And I have owned these daily drivers since 1983 and and most of them were owned for over 10 years, a few 15+ years.

But for some reason being leak-free seems to be an issue here and also on my BMW R1200 GSA LC which drips coolant from the seal drainage hole. Nothing serious, but the point is, it leaks!

Leaking joints, leaking water pumps? What did they do, invent these items last year and haven't sorted the problems with them yet? This has been going on since the 991 came out. Reminds me of Windows updates.

Yes, I got so tired of this constant issue and worry with a brand new car at this price point. (You don't expect this from a $150k car.). Multiple calls to PCNA helped to give some peace of mind. I highly recommend contacting them if you have this issue and the car is still under warranty. Regardless, my wife and I decided to trade the car in just last week on another luxury performance brand. This whole experience left a bad taste in our mouths and somewhat turned off to the brand for now. It's understood that no car is bulletproof, however it seems this has been going on for quite sometime with the 991.2 since it changed to turbo and now some 992s I hear.. Several generations of water pumps too. It's a shame that they haven't gotten a handle on it yet, especially with their flagship sportscar benchmark to what all other cars are compared.

Default Yes - at 10,000 miles

Water pump went out at 10K miles +/- on '19 Carrera S MT Thankfully I only live 2 miles from the dealer. Dealer took one look and replaced without questions. Only bummer is it took a day to get the part.

Following up on what Eman9914S contributed, BINGO. Our 911 was an early build (late 2016 as a 2017 model). This means that about 4 years have gone by and Porsche still seems to be challenged by this water pump seal problem. Say what??!! Not good news.

Incredibly, they still win races at LeMans. Obviously they must have one hell of a large coolant reservoir tank.

So I just bought my 2018 991.2 911S literally 2 weeks ago (26k mi). I just noticed pink liquid underneath the engine. Thank goodness I sprung on a CPO. Took it to the dealer, and the service rep didn’t even bat and eye and said, yup it’s the water pump. I asked how much it would have cost out of pocket and he said around $3K. Yikes!

Its absurd how fast this part fails and am concerned how long the replacement will last. Why I am thinking about buying fidelity warranty to extend in case of this 3k hit

You can probably replace the water pump for about a third of the dealer price. But yea, don’t know what it is about German cars. I’ve had water pump issues on my previous BMWs too.

I think Porsches are really meant to be air-cooled, which is why I still have a 993.

But you are right, my BMW R1200 GS Adventure LC spits a few drops of coolant from the weep hole, not enough to be a concern, but what the hell is that **** all about. Now you know why I drive an Acura as a daily driver.
