Default Anyone else own / owned a 997 GT3?

I’m looking into buying a 991 (either S or GTS) - I just picked up a 997.2 GT3 as it’s been my dream car since the days I laid my eyes on one. (White with PCCB)

It was an easy choice for me to get the GT3 once it came on the market but now I’m trying to find a replacement to my F80 M3.

I’m approved for 150k with PFS for a replacement vehicle and I’m having a really hard time trying to figure out what would compliment my GT3 where both cars feel special in their own way.

The 991 would be a daily driver on most days. I was thinking a 991 would be a good way to go because I love my music / new tech along with low end torque you get with a turbo motor (my m3 is a beast) and I feel that they would feel very different and therefore compliment each other with their clear differences.

The 6 speed on the GT3 is perfect and the 7 speed on 991’s isint as good and therefore I may end up going PDK which then takes me down the road of maybe just getting another GT3, this time a 991.1, as a daily because it’s so much value for $$

I would absolutely love a GTS Targa, it’s such a beautiful car but they run up in $$ and then I just think I’d be better off with a 991 turbo.

The amoung of variants in 911’s is a blessing and a curse.

If you were in my position, what would you do?

Going from an F80 M3 to a 997 GT3 would be like going form an El Dorado to a Go Cart. 997 GT3 is a very raw car.

My F80 is on coilovers, has stage 2 tune and down pipes. It's hardly comfortable. Regardless, I didn't buy the GT3 as a daily (even though I easily could daily it) and that's what I'm looking for next - I just don't want something so refined and lacking of character that I'm constantly choosing my GT3 to work vs. whatever daily 911 I end up choosing.

Even with those mods, the two cars are still so completely different. My suggestion is to drive one and see how you feel.

I have a 997.1 GT3 for track use only with some mods and have added a Carrera T to the stable as a DD. While the T obviously doesn’t have the rawness of the 997 GT3 it still is a very driver involving car and the engine is perfect for DD - for me just the right mix of comfort and driving fun at a « reasonable » price (in the Porsche world...).

I daily drive my 2014 C2S manual... love it. Came from a Panamera 4S originally and also drive a Cayman R which is more RAW than the other cars.

When comparing your 997.1 GT3 6 speed to the T 7-speed, are you finding yourself frustrated one transmission is better than the other? I have thought the T would be a good option as well. I was just thinking 370HP seems low although I do end up modifying my cars and will most likely tune and downpipe the 911 regardless and I'd be north of 450HP at that point.

The 997 GT3 gearbox feels more mechanical (if that makes sense), though with spirited driving gear changes are more intuitive for someone who is used to 6-speed boxes. The 7-speed in the T needs more consciuos gear changes to get it right but once you get the hang of it the fun is the same. As for the hp discussion you may want to browse the « When 370 is enough » thread :-) But as you say: should be easy and not too costly to add some ponies if you feel the need for it.

I've had a 2007 997.1GT3 for 3 yrs , tracked it. Learned how to H-T on that car. No rev match. Fun car that's not really a DD especially with buckets and stop n go driving.
If you want a real complementary car consider a Cayman GTS. If you want a 911 you've got lots of choices.

I had a 997.2 GT3 for a short few thousand miles. It was probably the best put together car I've ever had. Very high build quality, stellar fit/finish etc. I would have kept it if I wasn't instructing for motorcycle track days at the time. However, that GT3 was probably the worst daily driving car I've ever had as well. The car is simply not built with commuting and stop/go type congestion. Perhaps the new 991.2 is better in this respect, but this time around I'm choosing a 911 T. The suspension is more compliant, lighter clutch, torque is lower in the rpm range etc. For how I use a 911 I'm thinking that it'll be a much better fit.

Ok, my Targa 4GTS is on the ship and should be here in about two weeks but my hearth keeps telling me to get GT3 instead. I will turn 50 next summer 2019 and my wife keeps telling me I am too old to drive winged car with bucket seats. is the GT3 uncomfortable for long drive ?

At 48 myself I'd lean toward a GT3 Touring if I had the chance, but I don't.

I could have my cake and eat it too with a Targa GT3
